3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
When coming from a stop my car feels like it has zero power. It slowly increases speed until 2000rpm and then takes off and drives great over 20mph. If i shift manually from low - 2 - Drive it feels perfect. I just drained and refilled transmission so i know the fluid level is good. Any ideas?
sticky solenoid, kick down cable, electrical problem????
I dunno much about automatic transmissions, but it sounds to me like a worn transmission with slipping clutches. Can't remember how exactly, but manual low/2nd somehow keeps it from slipping.

I believe that's because when you put it into L/2/specified-gear, the torque-converter lockout kicks as soon as the car is rolling...
maybe have your Torque converter checked out?

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do
ive done a number of engine swaps on toyotas but not on a camry yet. I can get a 96 with the 1mz for next to nothing so it would be cheaper for me just to do a swap. more time but i enjoy the project
^ So you DO know you need to swap the dashboard, dashboard mounting pieces, entire SRS system and all wiring, for a 3VZ to 1MZ swap, right?
Oh, if you get an XLE you need to swap the HVAC unit as well. And you'll be goign from R12 to R134a, so you'll need to change all the o-rings and evacuate the system.
