Won't go into O/D

This is on my 93 XLE 3VZ-FE. I cant get the thing to shift into O/D for anything. It has been doing this for the past couple weeks, and it's KILLING my already BAD gas mileage!

I know that on these cars they are set up not to go into O/D until the engine reaches a certain temp. Im wondering if it is the sensor that tells the ECU that the engine is warmed up, but I dont know what that sensor is called OR where it is located?

Can anyone help with this? Also, if anyone knows anything else that may be causing this, please chime in!

I also want to mention that I have drained/filled it before. Once about 6 months ago and again this past weekend. This past weekend though, I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and gasket also. I cleaned off the magnets and this is what they looked like:

And this was found in there too!!!! It was stuck to one of the magnets.

NONE of these magnets were in the correct spots either. I placed them in the spots according to the manual.

Thanks!

That's a beautiful photograph. With the right cropping you could frame that.

Perhaps title it "transmission transformed to flower".

HOLY SH... there's no way the mags should have that amount of shavings on them. Judging from that connector you found, my guess is that the trans is toast. It looks like a whole gear got ground to dust, and ended up on the mags.

That creamy color ATF would suggest you're getting coolant into the ATF??

Are you getting MIL lights? The engine coolant temperature sensor looks like below and should be on the water outlet side of the upper radiator hose. Not exactly sure. I wonder if you can paper clip the two wires at the sensor to imitate a hot condition. But that's only if the transmission isn't in limp mode.

dude, you blew third gear (or fourth), that is WAY too much metal.

only other thing could be low ATF, how many miles on the motor? Is it leaking???

if you have an ATF problem, it may not shift properly. Very Common! check the levels.

Yeah, those magnets have an awful lot of steel on 'em. When I did my Cam's transmission filter and gasket this summer, there was about 2 mm of pasty black mud on them. They didn't look like porcupines, like yours. And that was after ~230k miles of service (yeah, I know, my bad!).

Please do this and you'll have a happy day:

1) Buy the new Coolant Temp Sensor (it's the only connector that is green. Very obvious).
2) Adjust (too tight and your transmission will not stay in 4th, too loose and it will not shift correctly either) the steel-cable (the one beside the steel-cable that rev your engine).
