3rd Generation CV Half-Shaft Assembly

I've read up on all the how-to's for CV shaft removal and installation after finding a boot crack and leak in my left-side inner CV boot. I wasn't going to bother with fixing the boot and instead was going to replace the whole drive shaft. I was working up the courage to do the job myself and before ordering the new shaft assembly for the left side, I was wondering If I should replace the right side as well?

It looks like the new assemblies come with new axle nuts, but not sure about reusing the old snap rings. Am I missing anything for this job, parts-wise? Also, what do-it-yourselfer has done this job (strictly replacement of whole assembly) and how much time is necessary?

Comments/Adivce is much appreciated!

you will need a 8mm hex socket to remove the axle from tranny. also a 30mm socket to remove axle nut

there should be a DIY on here

i would go ahead and replace both sides.

did mine (both side) took me maybe 2-3 hours. had to pick up parts/tools i need/didnt have

If you inspect the other side and the boot is fine you might want to wait. You should also check engine mounts because if the mounts are bad the boots can tear more easily.

The new/rebuilt axle should come with one axle nut and a circlip for the snap-in type? No? I'd just get a new circlip from the dealer. It's a $2-3 or so.

Work carefully so you don't damage the oil seal on the differential. Of course, unless you want to change that as well while it's apart.

Get a torque wrench suitable for the range you need. Tighten the axle nut while the wheels are off the ground. Don't touch the sway bar unless both wheels are off the ground or the sway bar will be loaded with tension! Not too healthy.

If there is any protective grease on the axle nut threads (for protection during shipping) clean it off with brake cleaner. You need a clean thread so you don't over torque the axle nut.

torque the cv axle nut to 217ft lbs
the balljoint mounting bolts get torqued to 94 ft lbs and it says to torque the wheel to 76 ft lbs i had mine tore down in about 20 minutes but i had just put it together then during my test drive my cv axle snapped but its all getting fixed tomorrow

Thanks, well I got my new left and right Cardone Select driveaxles from Rock auto for $50 and $60 respectively...what a deal, why would anyone considering working on a boot when the whole replacement part is so cheap?...anyways...

I will purchase some new tranny fluid, cotter pins, and high temp grease to coat the splines. New driveaxles came with ABS rings, one circlip on differential side of left side axle, snap ring on intermediate shaft side of right axle, and new axle nuts. My differential oil seal was just replaced at the dealership a month ago so I am not planning on replacing that. Looks like I am not going to need anything else in the way of hardware....so wish me luck!

Have you completed replacing both the half shaft axle assemblies? Can I humbly request you to post DIY photos/video to let me know
-How much time it took for you to do both sides? ~4 hours?
-What tools are needed?
-What lubricants are needed?
-What seals/pins/clamps etc are needed?
-WHat are the part numbers that you ordered for both Front right and left half shafts?
-How much did you pay in all to RockAuto including shipping and taxes? (~$110?)
Mine is a 95 Camry L4 sedan and and my front driverside outer CV joint clicks. I want to replace both axles to avoid all the hassle of take out the joint-clean innner-assemble outer...
