Question Found a odd looking hole. Is this normal?

I was changing out some vacuum hoses and noticed this strange looking hole.
Is it supposed to be like that?

Looks like it's going to the resonating chamber? Don't think there should be a hole. The engine is probably sucking dirt in from there.

its not going to hurt...just cover it up and you'll be fine its a resonator box to keep the intake noises down

Oh ok, just dirt. Phew! That's ok, right?

Guess I'll wrap some electrical tape around it in the morning.
Yet another thing to harass my local dealership about.

Done that a few times already.

Also scrubbed my throttle body so clean, a hobo could eat out of it.

Well, you can easily fix this. But I'd make sure it's better than a temporary fix.

Sure, the air filter is going to let a very small amount of dirt through. But too much of it will cause accelerated wear to your piston rings and cylinder bore over the long haul.

You'll end up getting more blowby into the crankcase, use oil, lose compression, etc. Basically the same engine aging process but faster. "Accelerated aging".

So you want to keep dirt down as much as possible.

I'd say I'm still very much a "n00b." I mean, I think I get the general idea, and some basic concepts, but overall... eh. I'm just spending a lot of time and money right now getting this baby back into shape. Also trying to wash off any old oil in various places from previous leeks... to keep it lookin' shiny.

Basically, some stuff I understand... but ask me how a transmission works and what the various components are... I'll start bleeding from my ears.

I've posted some pictures here -> Bumper Replacement

and here -> Official Gen 3 & 4 Camry picture thread! DO NOT POST COMMENTS!

The electrical tape adhesive will melt in the heat of the engine compartment, and allow dirty air in. It would be better to make a patch slightly larger than the hole out of a piece of a soda can. Apply the patch over the hole with hi-temp RTV sealant around the perimeter of the hole, then let dry. Apply a second layer of sealant over the whole patch(inside, and out if possible) and onto the hose, then let that dry. The sealant will be able to flex and expand with the hose better than the tape would.

That is a good idea. However, I will tape it up with something as a very temporary fix. Maybe even cover up the hole with some material and tape that onto the hose. But I will try to replace it altogether for the long run.

Is there any claybar product you'd recommend? I just did a search and there seems to be a few out there.

Huh? I guess you're talking about me. LOL It still shines a little, but the paint is getting really beat up. The hood is just trashed, and my CF trunk is begging for clear coat.
