another intake thread - needing advice

after toying around with the idea of boosting my reliable 5SFE i decided that with an automatic transmission, little know how, and rust creeping in from every direction including on my block and oil pan (should i be worried btw?).. i was probably heading in the direction of destroying my car. i have since decided that with my current setup it would be probably better to just keep it as clean and reliable as possible while improving the overall performance and functionality of the car without any major modifications.

Thus my to do list as of now:
hid's
trd rsb
eibach pro kit springs
... and a cold air intake

now i seem to have two choices here. I can either go to autozone and buy their Spectre setup which includes the cone and piping for around 60 bucks or buy Venom_5's used weapon R. and advice here? youtube has me believing that the spectre sounds waay better.

second.. if i dont build a true CAI but rather go the easier route of SRI would it hurt my HP and/or throttle response over my stock airbox. I wouldnt mind running the piping but am frankly scared as to what will get sucked in especially if i leave the inlet to the piping by the bumper cover vent opening

is the SRI just for sound or does it actually hive me some modest hp gains ~ 5hp?

ps. anyone know where i can get my hands on a trd rsb?

thanks,
Cecil

As discussed here many times, a SRI or CAI does almost nothing for performance gains, just sound and looks. I am a fan f the Weapon R intake though. It will look cleaner and more appealing than a Spectre setup.

Good luck!

I just installed a weapon-r secret weapon and it does sound good, subtle, but good. Response at the throttle is a definite improvement but that's about it...will post pics eventually

considering that if not for visual upgrades my car is bone stock when it comes to performance.. a little extra oomph when i push down on the throttle would be most welcome and if it sounds goood then why not.

my only concern is having to get that o2 sensor converter "thing".. guy at autozone said something about getting it to make it fit in the new piping costs about an extra 25 at the nearest speed shop.... and having to clean the throttle body and such in the long run more often and potential damage caused by bigger particles entering the engine.

again im still wondering about fuel economy cuz ive read a lot of opposing opinion regarding that?

Fuel economy will go down if you keep on flooring your gas pedal just to hear the intake. Just don't change your driving habits but it's tempting to smash.

ya gotta remember that our automatic 5s-fe werent meant for speed so adding a sri or cai would probably get you more air then before, but that same air is going into the same non-speedy engine. so pretty much for the sound is all its for..if you got the money for a correct cold air (piping+water/heat shield) do that for looks and sound lol.
