3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The car was my sister's but my parents bought her a 2009 Acura TL last year, so she gave the car to me.
The car's been sitting for about a year, but I remember driving it before she put it away. The transmission and everything were buttery smooth..
The transmission (4-spd auto) isn't shifting smoothly now, the battery on the car had been dead for some time so I'm sure the PCM was reset but it's been about 50-75 miles and it's still not shifting great, the car jerks forward in every gear. Should I try resetting it again?
Also, when I filled up for the first time and I unscrewed the fuel cap it hissed (pressure release) until I got the cap off, then the car began to idle roughly after that (filled with 93).
The car is pretty quick though! (besides the weird shifting) My other car is a '02 Impala and I think that the Camry is wayyyyyyyyyyy faster!

First, if it were my car, I'd have the transmission serviced, and I'd run a can of seafoam in a full tank of gas, just because it sat for a year. That may just fix it.
How many miles on the Car?

The car has 190,3XX miles, the transmission was flushed at 150K miles according to the records, so I don't think it needs a service unless sitting causes some sort of reaction with the fluid.
I'm afraid of Seafoam because of what it can do to older engines.. I ran 1/3 of a can of Seafoam in my Impala's oil and it leaks now.
Also, I've read that it isn't that great for the catalytic converter.
seafoam cleans everything...so any old crapy seals or gaskets that have been broken down by oil will fall victim to its cleansing powers. but that just means its time to replace gaskets. id rather have a clean engine then a dirty engine that doesnt leak.
You keep comparing your Camry to your Impala...totally different cars!
I've been using Seafoam in my Vehicles for years, and I've never had a problem with it. Good stuff, it really is!
Sorry, lol.
My Impala is my first car, so I'm used to only caring for it. I don't have to get transmission flushes until every 60K+ miles with it too.
As for the Seafoam, I'll do it if I disconnect the cat. Lol, it just worries me especially since it's never been done on that engine, and the crap that comes out the back could easily clog/ superheat some things.
I think I'm going to try resetting the PCM because my Sister likes to floor it a lot and that's probably not a good thing to do when the PCM is relearning.
seafoams bad for the cat?? inform me more plz i never knew that
Well yeah, Cat's are designed to take CO and convert it to CO2 using super high temperatures. When you run a cleaner through an engine it knocks a BUNCH of stuff loose that is then burned causing higher than normal CO output and thus super heating the catalytic converter.
It says right on the bottle not to use it in high mileage applications due to the ill effects it's had on engine and exhaust components from the sheer amount of gunk that is outputted.
hmm...never herd of this happening on any camrys...maby another impalla thing.
it should be fine on the cat. if somthing happens to it...then the cat was goin bad anyways.
as far as trannys...i HATE what GM did with their "non-service requiered" trannys. my girls cavalier HAS to be taken to a dealership and only a dealership just to change the fluid and it has to be changed JUST as often as my camry to run its best...which i can do myself.
Automatic transmission (1992-96): The "A-40 series" automatic transmission may shift harshly because rubber check balls shrink, blow through a plate, and become dislodged.
Maybe your balls shrunk, from the car sitting so long??
