3rd Generation Power steering in the rain 3rd gen

So every time I drive when its raining or has just rained, if i take a somewhat sharp turn my power steering goes out and i'm tugging on the wheel for dear life.

I took a quick look and the hoses seem to be without holes and i have plenty of power steering fluid.

Anyone got any suggestions on what the issue might be?
thanks

Ther eis a good chance the PS belt (Crank to PS pump) is loose, and/or needs to be replaced. When water gets on the pully, it just makes it more slippery. So if the belt isn't turning the PS pump pully, you don;t have power steering. So it should just be a simple fix of a new belt.

That happened to me on one occasion as well; never happened again after that.

Could be a loose belt, kind of a PITA to tighten it.

I'd say leave it alone if its a PITA. If it happens again, look into it. I had this happen once on my mother's Chrysler T&C minivan... was raining and the power steering went our for 5 seconds.... never happened again.

Sounds like the PS belt is slipping. That's why I'd use a Krik-it II belt tension gauge. You'll need a long pry bar to help set tension on that silly design. I wish they'd put an automatic tensioner on there, then you won't have this problem.

Check to see there is no oil on the pulleys. Use a toothbrush and alcohol to clean and dry. Maybe even put on a new belt if necessary. Check rockauto.com for Gates belts.

About $20 on Amazon:

Agreed, it's a major pain! You have to remove the tire and a plastic panel withheld by two bolts and even then your'e working in a tight space... BTW, the PS belt only costs 12$ at my local dealership, dunno why you'd pay 20$ for aftermarket stuff...

Yeah, many brands of PS belt are only about $5 each online. Shipping often kills the deal unless there are other items.

$20 is for the belt tension gauge.
