Which brand of Tr Fluid for 4G 4-Cyl?

Hello,

I want to change the automatic transmission fluid of my 2000 camry, just drain and fill.
Which brand of Transmission fluid do I need from Wal-Mart and how much?

The car manual does not specify which brand of transmission fluid is needed and the quantity.

Year: 2000
Eng: 5SFE
Cylinders: 4
Miles: 105,000
Thanks.

Manual does indicate type of fluid as DEX III (Dexron 3) Mercon.

Dipstick handle is orange/brown.

Just get the gallon jug of Supertech (Wally World brand) Dexron III -- if you're just doing a drain-and-fill, you'll want to repeat once a year or so anyhow.

I checked out Mitchell on Demand and they say any type of brand is okay as long as it is a Dexron III.
Is your a camry CE, LE, SE?? I am going to guess it is an LE so you need 2.6 quarts for a 4 cyl and 4.10 quarts for a V6. So 2.6 quarts for your drain and fill.

Walmart SuperTech (Dexron III compatible) works great. And good deal too.

You should also get a new ATF strainer and pan gasket. Fram works fine at about $15. Make sure you change the fluid in the differential as well.

You need to clean out the metal sludge in the pan and wipe clean the magnets. However, cleanliness is important, and fluid level needs to be accurate.

cougar just wants to do a drain and fill, not a pan drop...

Right, right. However, I'd highly suggest a pan drop. Especially after 100K miles. (Actually I'd do it after 30K miles on these dirty Aisin A series).

In fact, when Toyota first moved to the, IMO clunker Aisin U-series, they were using a straight strainer just like in the A-series. Then they decided it just wasn't good enough. (Who would ever think a plain strainer is good enough?) So they updated and went with a filter.

Won't go into O/D

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback
I looked for the Dexron iii at Wal-Mart, the closest is Pennzoil (to be used on cars that had Dexron iii); Autozone has Coastal brand.

Does this "to be used on cars that had Dexron iii" means that it is a generic ATF?

I think Pennzoil brand would be better than Coastal.

I did not find the Supertech (Wally World brand) Dexron III at Wal-Mart or Autozone; anybody knows which shops carry this brand?

This is what I use.

Here is the product data sheet.

It shifts really smooth and nice. I bought it at Autozone.

Basically, you just shop on price -- if it meets the Dexron III spec, it'll work (ATF is one of the few things in the car where I'll recommend just going for lowest price). Supertech is the Walmart house brand, so it's Wally World or nothing for that (I just recommend and use it because it's usually readily available and a good bang for the buck). Just don't make the mistake of thinking "if Dexron III is good, Dexron VI has got to be better" -- the newer Dexron specs tend to have lower viscosity than Dexron III, which often causes shifting problems in the older trannys.

Actually Walmart's SuperTech ATF is in quite a demand. Often times Walmart does run out. In some areas of the country the ATF is made by Pennzoil. In others it may be Warren Unilube or others, I recalled reading. I believe Coastal is a Warren Unilube brand. In fact, here it is "Manufacturer of the Coastal Products":
http://www.warrenunilube.com/home.html

Pennzoil is now owned by Royal Dutch Shell. But I do like Ashland's Valvoline products or British Petroleum's Castrol. Of course the Mobil-1 by Mobil-Exxon (Esso in Europe).

GM stopped licensing anything other than the newest synthetic-blend Dexron VI. Therefore, oil companies can no longer sell ATF called Dexron III. They have to say it's Dexron III-compatible.

You can also use Walmart's SuperTech Mercon V. Look on the back, it's also compatible with Dexron III. The Ford-approved formula is a synthetic blend. A step above the dino Dexron III.
