3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
just ah sugestion.. personally me.. i got to the pic ah part and practice anything big out there and so i can do it right when it comes to my car.. just ah thought.
The cigarette lighter lamp is a special part. The bulb is soldered directly to the connector.
It's a good candidate for a reliability upgrade. It took ages to find one in the boneyard that wasn't already burnt out. But there isn't much room for both an LED and resistor.
I've replaced both those bulbs on the A/C and rear defroster.
I honestly don't remember how but I did.
It wasn't hard.
I remember I pulled the whole HVAC unit out, and once I got the buttons out, there was a circle with an x indentation in it. Unscrew that and there's your bulb!

Do you remember what size is the bulbs for the A/C and rear defroster? 3mm, 4mm, or 5mm?
C'mon guys, Anyone change their AC button or rear defrost? It would be great if you can share how to access them....
I've removed the A/C control unit before. I've also removed the three switches. A/C, Recirculation, and Defrost. The bulbs in there are very small. They are about the size of that cigarette lighter bulb... if not smaller?
I'm not sure if I will have time tomorrow, but if you still haven't figured it out, maybe I can take it out and snap a few pictures. The only hard part about the whole thing is the cable that goes from the temperature control knob to someplace inside the dashboard. That thing was I pain, last I remember.

But I THINK maaaaaaaaaaybe they were the same size bulb as the gauge lights.
I'll check this weekend for you.
Alright cool..cuz i know the light in the gauge are #74 and #194..I've seen other who took the bulb out of the a/c and defroster and they look smaller then the bulb in the gauge and i don't know what size is it.
For kicks I rigged up a #74 LED bulb into that cigarette lighter bulb socket just to see what it looked like. I basically had to wrap the back end of the lighter socket up with electrical tape to hold it all together. The light has to bend all the way around to illuminate that ring. With a LED it does a good job of lighting up the bottom half. Thats about it. If you have a good working bulb I wouldn't worry about it. I tried some foil to reflect some more light to point it up towards the top of the ring. It looks ok. But not great.
They are not original, but they say JKL EWG203, if that gives you any information about their size.
The A/C and Defrost switches both use the same size bulb. The bottom of the base has the number 4 on it. The defrost switch also uses another smaller size bulb, but it seems to be missing from my switch. I probably couldn't find it in the auto stores when I was replacing them a couple years back.
The recirculation switch is a bit different. It has a circuit board, with two LED's soldered onto it.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Haux. I took out my A/C console today. Those lights side are tiny as hell. I wonder why there are two bulbs for the defroster button? My bigger bulb had a yellow cover and smaller with green. I hope the 4 means 4mm, cuz i wanna get the right size bulb on the first try. Are you going to change the bulb to another color? Thanks, for the pics.
