Mysterious check engine light

Occationally I've been having this weird problem with my check engine light. Whenever I get on the interstate and start going over say 60 mph *sometimes* my check engine light will come on. But it never comes on while I'm in the city. Everytime I'll pull over, pop the hood, inspect everything and after starting it back up it will never come back on for like another few days. It's weird, I'd love to have it tested to see the code, but if the light doesn't stay on I assume it wouldn't show the code anymore right? Any suugestions as what the cause is? Btw it's a 92 2.2 automatic, I've recently added header, catless exhaust, and perf muffler. It's got intake too, but that's all I've done to it performance-wise. I'm thinking my o2 sensor might be going out, cuz it is running a little rich I hear light popping sounds from the exhaust. I don't know if thats backfire or just normal...

Visit Autozone's free repair guide, with registration. Learn how to pull Check Engine codes using jumper wires.

The next time the light is on, pull to a stop in a suitable area, don't turn off the engine. Just turn the key to ACC so the engine stops but the computer doesn't shut off. Jumper the connectors and read off the code(s).

Post them here.

My guess would be something or some part is broken but not really broken. The check engine light will only come on if the same component/part fails 2 driving cycles (or whatever its called) in a row. Then if it works again then it will shut off. But since its a OBDI type, it might not be so, but im not sure.

But if the check engine light comes up again, take 2 paper clips and jam them in the slot (i think its located under the drivers side leg area) Put the car in the ON position and the check engine light should start blinking.

That site should help you figure out how and where to stick the paper clips
