Hello,
Recently purchased a 1998 Camry for my daughter to learn to drive. I have put about 600 miles on the car and all seems well.

There is a square button by the shifter that I cannot figure out. It is not the OD - that is on the shifter, this is above the P(arking) letter.

The car did not come with an owners manual. When I press it, nothing seems to happen. What can it be for?

What does the button say on it? Have a picture?

All I can think of that year would be TRAC (Traction Control).

Unless its Shift Lock Overide?

Atleast thats what is on our Gen3.

If it is, it just allows the shifter to be changed to all positions regardless of whether the engine is on & your foot is on the brake.

that is the Override for Automatic Shift Lock, usually there is a plastic plate covering it. once you take the plate out with a screwdriver there is a button underneath, once pressed it allows you to shift gears with engine off, e.g. for towing a broken car to the shop, or when you want to push a broken automatic tranny car, etc. otherwise it would sit ducks on Parking gear locked.
