Brake asbestos

Anybody know if the drums on a 92 would have asbestos shoes in them or not? They feel a bit warped and I wanna have a look, but dieing sucks.

Well Kenny u've died plenty of times before, so one more can't hurt

Anyways there is a possibility of asbestos, just wear surgical gloves, safety glasses and a paper face mash if you are that worried.

Proper procedure is to carefully and gently wet everything down and keep it wet, no other protection needed according to the EPA.

It's unlikely that the shoes have asbestos.

Even if they did, the danger from asbestos comes from breathing in visibly dusty air continuously over decades. Asbestos is not toxic, and it's not poisonous. It's really very stable. The damage comes when just the wrong length of fibers irritates the lung over a long period and a few fibers remain embedded into the scars that form,

The danger is comparable to walking barefoot on sandpaper. Doing it occasionally isn't a problem. But if you spend your working day walking on sandpaper, you'll end up with abrasives encapsulated by scar tissue that covers what remains of your feet.

That said, don't clean the brake parts by using a dry brush to create a cloud of dust. Most of it is just powdered rust from the rotor, but you don't want that in your lungs either.

Yeah, the wet wash-down method is recommended. You can also wear P100 respirator, whether or not the lining has asbestos. No compressed air for cleaning for sure.

I don't have those wet kits shops use, but I hope the cleaning agent isn't petroleum based. They attack the rubber. I'd think alcohol based would work fine. I only wipe down the rubber area with alcohol, everything else standard brake cleaner (petro based).
