'99 Camry 2.2 with 125k. Current timing belt has 65K on it. The manual recommends a 90k change interval, unless you do "extreme driving", in which case it recommends 60k. Quite a difference. But I think it considers my urban commuting to be "extreme".
Just curious how long timing belts have lasted for people here. Thanks!
I changed the first one on my 98 Camry 2.2 at 93,000 miles. Don't know how long that new one would have lasted since the car was totaled 9,000 miles later. Our driving is in the Chicago area, so I can't see any urban commuting being much worse. I would say you are safe with the 90,000 mile change interval unless the belt has been compromised with oil or coolant leaking on it.
I do a bit of "severe" driving with idling & traffic.
I go through water pumps & belts quick. The 3rd is on the car @ 69,000.
They all worked fine, but I feel they should be replaced a lot more, as I feel the cooling & timing are integral components. You'll be fine til 90,000. Just check your belt for proper tension & cracking, and you'll be fine.

On my 2000 LE 4cyl (5S-FE), I changed mine at 91K miles. It actually didn't look too worse for wear. The 90K mile timing change interval seemed right. I drive around the Seattle suburbs. However, I did take the precautionary measure of getting all the seals (cam, front main), tensioner and H20 pump changed.

I put well over 100K on one but it doesn't mean anything. I've been told belts sometimes last longer but also break shortly after they have run the recommended interval. The thing is, these things seem to always last a certain amount of mileage and after that, it's anyone's guess. In my case I already had changed the belt twice. The car was old and high mileage, 10 miles to work and back and I didn't care if it broke as it shouldn't hurt my non-interference engine.
My 98 had 111k when the waterpump seized and chewed the belt up. Belt was in good shape otherwise.
Tensioner and idler were in good shape but replace them either way, tough if somebody was cash strapped they could probably leave them untill the second belt change I think.
Water pump should be changed for sure every time since its only 40 something bucks at napa.
I have 239,000+ miles on my '97. The timing belt was last changed at about 176,000.....so that's around 63,000 miles. I checked the condition of the belt a couple of weeks ago....and it looks as if new. No signs of any problems. Nevertheless, I will change it in a few months anyway, when the weather is better.
The V6 has an automatic tensioner, the I4 doesn't. One TN owner reported that at 110K miles the T belt has about 1/2" of stretch, or about 2 teeth. So 90K on the V6 should still be fine, I wouldn't leave it on the I4 for that long.
I'd still do both the I4 and V6 at 5 years/60K miles. But people's mileages obviously differ.

somehow, i got my timing belt replaced twice already because of noisy water pumps (original OEM gave up at @ 55k, new aftermarket one gave up 10k later)... now running new OEM WP and all seals, Tbelt included, crossing fingers to not even see any of those areas of engine for a very long time now

Bought my car in 2003 with approx. 70,000 miles. I do not believe the belt had ever been replaced by that point. I had no idea what a timing belt even was back then. Broke at about 120,000 miles in 2005. Lasted quite a long time I'd say.
