O/D Light Flashes - 94 1MZFE

Eesh, camrys and toyotas in general may usually be great, but mine is just a PIECE.

My O/D light will flash when I drive around above 35-40mph or so (fast enough for it engage overdrive)
It's a consistent flash with about a 2 second delay in between. It doesn't seem to miss a gear or anything, and drives pretty smoothly all in all. Any idea what this means? I'm not driving it often, and I haven't even driven 100 miles in it since i bought it.

The trans fluid doesn't smell burnt; it does look old and in need of changing but not near death transmission old. I planned on changing it myself but I figure the shop will need to drop the pan to check the trans, so I hate to fill it full of new fluid yet... am I correct?

I'll be taking it to a transmission shop soon, but it'd be great to get an idea of what it is. If it's over $500 to fix I'll just drive the car til it dies.

Sadly, this was probably a great car at one point but the previous owners just didnt take care of it at all. Wouldn't be shocked if they changed the trans fluid just before selling it to cover up a major issue. It also smokes heavily and smells a little like burnt rubber after running awhile, I believe it's still burning off coolant and such from the water pump change <10 miles ago, but who knows. That's another post though.

I wont be heartbroken if I got duped and this car is a total loss, but it'd be great to just squeeze a reliable 5-10k miles out of it.
Thanks!
