3rd Generation led help!!

ok so i have custom led strips (audi inspired) under my headlights and parking lights. now i also have led fog lights (will upload pics later) mix all this with my hids and its a little over kill so what i wanna do is have the fog lights stay on with hids but i want the audi leds to cut off when the head lights come on. Could i do this by hooking the ground of the audi leds to the power of the head lights? or would that ruin the led strips? please help! yes i know just hook it to a switch but i just want it to be automatic off you know?

chris

So let me get this straight, you want the front leds to stay on at all times but cut off only when the headlights come on? The turn signals and brakes won't be a prob but imo a switch is the only option.

No you should never do this kind of try-and-error. You'll blow a fuse if you're lucky.... You'll melt some wire somewhere deep in a bunch of other wire-harness if you're less lucky.

I've bought a relay from my local electric store for less than $5.
Buy the one with 5-pin, not 4.

The 4-pin relay has 2 options (you'll ignore 1 of the pins):
option 1) power on: relay output is in open-circuit (switch OFF).
option 2) power on: relay output is in close-circuit (switch on).

You'll use option (1) for what you describe: when power on (the relay input and the head-line wires are in parallel), then the relay output is switched OFF (relay output is in series with your angel-eye, so angel eye is OFF).

no the leds come on with my parking lights. When i switch from parkin lights to headlights i want the led strips under my headlights to auto cut off if that makes sence.

The relay mentioned above will work fine. What you want is a "single pole, double throw relay" Just put it in series with the line you use to power the LEDs and connect it so the you use the two contacts that are "normally closed" when the relay gets NO power. When the relay is powered from the headlight power lead the relay will DISCONNECT the led power by moving the contact to the position you have nothing connected to. The relay should have an internal wiring diagram on the case which should explain it all to you.
