3rd Generation *HELP-1995 LE 2.2-Suspension Questions*

Hi my name is Derek. I am an ASE certified Master Tech. I am new to TN, but im deff going to be around for a while. I have a 1995 Camry LE 2.2L. I just recently installed a set of lowering springs. This is about 450 miles ago. I was UNhappy with the look they gave it. The gap between the front fender and the front wheel is about 1.5-2 inches. The rear is flush! I was hoping for an even drop, but the front looks much higher than the rear. I leveled the car and checked the ground clearance of the low point in the frame, front and rear. It is 3.5 inches front and rear. Technically the rear isnt lower, it just appears that it is. Im guessing that this is a common question. Should the rear appear lower? Is there common clearance issues between the spring plate on the strut and the opening in the strut tower? i have cut a hlaf of a coil off of my front springs an im still not satisfied. I can only cut another half off without seriously messing with the performance of the spring. What should i do? I want an even looking ride. It might just look off because i have some stupid skinny 14x5.5 steelies on it for the snow. Please let me know if you have had the same issue or have heard of it. thank you in advance.

I think this is relatively common. I dont know what type of springs you got on there. I know Eibach makes a few different drops with diff sets of springs. Some with an even drop some with a little more drop in the front. I would deff put the 17s on it before you go cutting anything else. I chose to go with the Eibach pro kit. It will be here Monday.
  • Do you have stuff in the trunk? Subs, Golf clubs, Dead bodies etc.....
  • What knid of struts do you have?
Good luck with everything. Got any pics?

I have a snow brush in the trunk. no deceased beings yet. lol. they are zenn springs. i have stock struts. i tested all of them, and three are perfect. the left rear is bad. im not gonna replace just the left rear. ill wait till i can get kyb's all around. i want to go with the agx model but they are costly so im probably gonna stick to gr-2's. ill look into picking up a better set of springs when i get them. i prefer tien products but i couldnt find any for the 95. also im looking for sway bars front and rear. cant find. what offset and width can i use for the 17 inch shoes? and what size rubbers can i wrap them with? i dont want to do a trial and error process, it costs too much. i am going to roll the fenders and i can do a minor pull if i have to. thanks again.

Id deff get those KYBs on there. Dramatic differance. The 17x7s will be perfect. As for the the tires, Ive had both 225/45/17s and 215s Id say go with the 215s. I thought the 225s looked like they might have clearance issues, but bigbird has them on with coilovers. The rear sway bar makes the most differance. Id plan on replacing the eldlinks at the same time. No front SB that I could find. I dont think its necessary IMO.
Check out my cardomain page for my setup.

let me show you some pics of what kind of springs i went through. =)

First set is Eibach Pro Kit. No difference in drop. Lol

The rear is eibach, the front is eibach with 2 coils cut.

Vogtland Front and rear. These springs were for the v6 models.

Vogtland rear with cut oem 4th gen front springs.

Oem 4th gen front and rear springs, cut 2.5 coils off.

Dropzone springs front and rear.

Dropzone rears with oem 3rd gen front cut springs. i believe 3-4 coils were cut. Best looking combination if you are going for looks. =)

All in all, my conclusion is, if you wanna do it right, go with coilovers, if you aint got the money, do it the ghetto style. =)

thanks man i think im gonna cut a little more off the fronts. im looking for a drop like the second picture. my front is just too high. im probably just gonna be getting a set of ksport COs. i was checking some out on ebay and they seem like my best bet, rather than spending 600 on struts and another 200 on springs. i just ordered a camber kit from eibach today for 40 dollars. hopefully that helps my rubbers last. where do i get a rear sway bar? i cant find any for the 3g. someone said the 99 solara one fits.

if your goin that low...coilovers are the ONLY smart way to go. there are no shocks that will handle a drop of over 2" well. especially with the GR2s. they are a near OEM spec shock and with a drop that low will do absolutly nothing for bound and rebound. the only shocks that MAY work are tokicos, and they have a life time warranty so you can beat them up.

just keep in mind how low the frame rails sit under the car. it may not look low but a 2 inch drop will leave ya with about 2-3" of ground clearence at the most. with soft springs or shocks they will bottom out a lot on speed bumps and such.

BTW...welcome to TN

i'd go for 17x7.5 with a 35+ or 40+ offset. 17x7 is pretty much the same as stock.....

thanks guys. i appreciate the help. i measured my frame clearance front and rear from the frame rail to the blacktop. i got 3.5" front and rear. if you have seen the tunerwerx D2 camry, thats the ride height, wheel size and fitment im looking for. i plan on taking this on the track on the weekends. plus my roads arent very rough, and i drive very cautiously. hence i do not smash my frame off bumps and holes. if i could get all the specs and the setup for that car i would be forever grateful. thanks again guys.

also im an available auto mechanic in the north shore massachusetts area. if you need some work done ill discount for TN members.

ive been using H&R sport springs, they dont have the lowest drop, but they are nice and even.

and thats on 17x7. its my daily driver, and i live in new york, which has roads that are on par with a bosnian mine field so i needed to keep some suspension travel.
