3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i want to make my car fast, as in i want to start racing and shit. i like my camry and want to keep it. so i was wondering what kind of engine swaps are recomended. or how i can get a trd engine. my camry is a 99 i take really good care of it and have a nice layout set for the car so please help. if you have done anything like this please leave pics and that so i can get a idea.
well, what engine do you have? that's a good question for starters. as for speed, best ideas are a)5speed swao, b) LSD, c) TRD supercharger (if you have a v6), Turbo if you have the 5s-fe
anything else will need more details on the car (i.e. engine, gearbox)
If you want real speed though... Buy a 93 v6, and a Gen2 MR2, and put the V6 in the MR2

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do
in that case...
invest in a 5-speed V6 swap. I recommend sourcing a 3vz-fe (because that engine is a tuner's dream; lots of torque, obd 1 computer, high detonation resistance, and can support 350 hp on stock internals)
of course, it won't be cheap...

this has been covered MANY times before... the search feature is your friend. also look at the stickies in the top of the gen3/4 section. Also, the 5S-FE is a DOHC engine...dual cams.

if you "know", PLEASE dont post a question like this. its so vague that there is NO way to answer other then "search". you should know better.

for a 99 id stay away from the 3vz. the 1mz is fine(upgraded parts avalible). not to mention you can just swap a front clip from a gen4 V6, guages and all...that cant be said for a 3vz swap. besides...anything past 300whp will want to have a stand alone anyways so the obd(whatever) doesnt matter.
I know you love your Camry, but trust me, if you want to start racing, your best bet would be to buy a new car, like a 240sx, E36 M3, anything with a huge aftermarket and is commonly used to race.
But if you insist on building the Camry, look into a 1mz v6 5speed swap. Then completely redo the suspension, i.e. coilovers, sway bars, strut tower braces, control arms, endlinks, bushings, the works.

even then the car wont be fast enough to "race." after you spend all that money for the swap youre still going to be in a 16 second, 3000+ lb, 200hp car. it sounds nice from where you are now but itll still be slow. to make it anywhere near decent youre going to need some sort of forced induction. i say buy a cheap project car but then again, its your choice

By far the best solution is really to ship your car to me, so I can build you a custom turbo setup. For about $8000-$10000, you could end up with a 400+ WHP Camry that is fit to daily drive (budget will determine how far you can go), and no problems keeping up. Hell, up to this day, I don't even drive anything else except for my Camry when I hit the local races with my buddies with all the popular tuner cars (STi, Evo's, 350z, etc..)
The 5S-FE still has tons of potential.. 5spd or auto, there are ways to make it fast.
