I got a stock temp Duralast stat from Autozone for $10 plus a few more for a new seal, just looking at it I like it more than the OEM, main seal is metal on metal, no rubber to rot out like the last one which was fine otherwise.
I had the same problem and I had Adam pick up a coolant sensor but that failed.
It's at the outlet of the water pump...not really "in" the water pump. All you do is remove the two bolts holding the water outlet (the pipe that the lower radiator hose connects to), remove it, and change out the thermostat and gasket.
+1 on the recommendation for Toyota OEM...at least when they fail they pretty much always fail "open" -- can't always say that about aftermarket. It's not like they're particularly expensive, either...something like $22 list for the thermostat, $6 for the gasket.

+2 on the OEM...and make sure the jiggle valve is in the correct position. Also burp the air out of the system.
