Started removing parts in order to change head gasket on 5sfe. About how long should this process take. are there any write ups? (I searched and didn't find anything.)
Length of time depends if you're good at taking stuff apart and putting things back together. Also, it depends on if you've done it before or not. I would say a person who hasnt had alot of practice and hasnt done this would take 20min removing the valve cover. Any additional time depends on what you want to do with it.
yea the valve cover, alternator, exhaust manifold are already off. Do you have to take the throttle body off necessarily can you just take it out with the throttle body on and have more room to take it off later.
I thought doing the headgasket was a HUGE process? Like one of those things that if you ever need done, "you might as well just buy a new car."
Is this not the case?
Not necessarily. Now if you blow a headgasket, a lot of people end up buying a whole new car, since there's oil in the coolent and coolent in the oil, and the block is most likely trashed.
But as for just changing it for preventative maintenance, I don't think it would be too difficult, as long as you know what you're doing...

Where did you get that? I have had blown headgaskets and never trashed an engine. The last one cost me about $225 to repair at a local shop. The head was checked and did not need machining. Oil in coolant and/or coolant in oil is no big deal either. I have never heard of anyone changing a head gasket as preventive maintenance either. Well, racing engines maybe.
Have anyone of you consulted the manual about replacing the gasket? There seems to be a lot of work involved, so much so, you might as well change other things while you're at it.
I have the manual on my computer. PM me if you want that portion.

Its not that bad of a job on the 4 cyl. If the cars higher milage, it would definately be a good time to check the valves and replace valve stem seals. Definitely change every gasket that is accessible also.
A head gasket job on these cars is basically a top end rebuild.
This is actually the manual from toyota. I would say the pertinant material is pgs 42-55. I think you might have to discern which steps you should do and should not do.
