94 Camry. Just a few questions..

Hi,

I just bought a 1994 Camry XLE V6 today and I love it so far! I just have a few questions. Pardon my ignorance. I tried the search but when I would search for something it would just bring up a blank page. Also, the car doesn't have the owner's manual with it.

What is the little red light to the left of the steering wheel between the mirror switch and the interior lights dimmer? Mine is staying on constantly and I have a feeling it shouldn't be.

The oil light flashes every few seconds but I checked the oil and it's fine. Any idea what it could be?

Does anyone know any website where I could find the owner's manual to download? Doesn't necessarily have to be free.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Josh

I have a 2000 Camry LE, but I'm going to guess that it's the light for the security system/alarm. When the alarm is engaged (doors locked, engine off), the light should be flashing. The other week mine started to stay on while driving for some reason. I think I turned it off by pressing it? Not sure why it happened in the first place. May be worth a try.

Maybe oil pressure? Someone else will likely be more helpful.

http://www.camrystuff.com/ has great repair manuals. As far as the owners manual... I'm not sure if it's there. You may be able to buy one pretty cheaply on eBay.

I live in Tulsa by the way. Surprised to see a few 'Okies' 'round here lately.

You sure it's the oil light and not the "check engine" light? A flashing "check engine" light indicates that the motor is misfiring bad enough to damage the catalytic converter.

If it is a flashing oil light, hopefully it's a flakey oil pressure sender or perhaps a bad wire from the sensor, otherwise it could indicate that the oil pump needs replacing. You can pick up a cheap oil pressure gauge from Harbor Freight ( http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92687 ) or probably something similar for twice as much money from an auto parts store, unscrew your oil pressure sender, and get a direct reading of your oil pressure.

Haven't seen one for the Gen3 rigs at camrystuff. You can hardcopies cheaply on ebay, or you can subscribe to a two-day pass at Toyota TIS ( techinfo.toyota.com ) for $15 and download any manual you want (although the Factory Service Manual has to be downloaded in itty bitty pieces)

Thanks for the help so far guys!

The red light is just staying constant, even when I'm driving. It doesn't flash at all. Haven't tried pressing it because it doesn't really look like something you can press. I'll give it a try in the morning, though.

It's definitely the oil light (picture of a little oil can). I really should have my mechanic give it a good once-over anyway so I'll have him check it out.

the little red light is most likely an led for an aftermarket alarm system. post a pic if you can. the "oil can" light represents low oil pressure. yo umay have a partially clogged pickup in the oil pan, a worn oil pump or worn rod bearings. try ebay for the owners manual. best deal on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1994-...Q5fAccessories

That red light is an alarm system, it should be...

a.) out while the key is in the on position,
b.) blinking when the car is alarmed,
c.) steady on when the alarm is disabled.

I would bet yours is disabled, it may have been disabled because it was not functioning properly, regardless check the driver's side foot well for a toggle switch, usually this is where the alarm switch is located, alarm status usually can only be changed with the key in the 'ON' position.

Second, your oil light like people have stated could be,

a.) oil pump is on her way out.
b.) oil pressure sensor is shot.

Due to the conditions you are experiencing, I would lean towards 'B'. As usually when the oil pump is on its way out, the light will appear at usually idle speeds, and go away as engine revs usually hit the 4,000 RPM range.

Like others have stated get an aftermarket reading on it. I am also pretty sure its the sensor as it stays on all the time, and also because your block hasn't seized.

Best of Luck.
