Stock alternators are pretty good, and its not really about how much you use it but more about how clean you keep it so that it runs longer. It's not an engine afterall and would run better at cooler temperatures, so keeping it clean and not abusing it by making it do too much work at any point will help extend its life.
My 1995 camry alternator has 164500 miles and still going strong....(touches wood) :-)

Just curious, for those of you who lost an alternator, was it un-rebuildable or did it just need new brushes or diodes? I ask this because the only Toyota that I ever had alternator problems with (a '79 Corolla) was good to go after changing out the diodes (way cheaper than a new alternator, at the time...20-odd years back). I'd figure most problems would be diodes or brushes...both easy to replace, or cheap to have a motor rebuilder do it for you.
FWIW, 105K on my current alternator. She's still a baby.
