Tail light on Trunk Lid Question

Hi All,

I have a 1992 Camry and I had the famous "idiot light" problem, so I finally decided to take a look in the back and I noticed when I armed my car with my car alarm, one of the lights wasn't turning on. So today after work I decided to replace the bulb but I guess it's seized into the socket because the darn thing exploded in my hands.

Any how, the bottom end of the broken light bulb is screwed into the socket pretty tight. Does this mean I'll have to cut the wires and buy a new bulb socket?

Thank you to all that reply.

Try grabbing it with some pliers and twisting it off. If you still can't get it off you will just need a new bulb holder unit(I have used ones if you are in a jam)

I honestly should take a picture and show you how mangled the stupid bubl holder unit is right now. I think I might have to cut the wires...

Thanks for the offer but I live in Canada, so it's OK. I think I'll drop by a Toyota dealership or or local Canadian Tire (not sure what the equivalent is in the US) and buy one. Any idea how much those holders are?

Also, I tried taking the bulb out of the other taillight that's working but no luck. It's stuck too. It's been a long time since I've had to change the bulbs. Any idea on how I can unscrew it? I guess next time I should put some dielectric grease in there before I put the bulbs in?

Last question. What part number are the bulbs? Are they 1156s?

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

For the 1157 bulbs, are they straight pull-out or do I have to twist them?

Thanks a lot!

Just FYI, the dealership doesn't sell connectors. They only sell the entire wiring harnesses which will cost about as much as the value of your first born. So this is something you would have to buy from an auto store. However, shipping a small item like that from the US to Canada is very inexpensive. A few bucks at most for USPS First Class International. If that poster has one or two to send you, that wouldn't be a bad option.

I was wrong. Recently I found out that Toyota DOES sell each and every connector used in the vehicle. The parts guy at the dealership told me they don't. I understand now that it was total bullshit. They don't want you to waste their time with petty stuff like that. At camrystuff.com, there is an Electrical Wiring manual. In it are some diagrams and lists of the various connectors as part of the wiring harnesses. And at the bottom of the pdf, there is an entire list of those connectors and their part numbers. You can order those part numbers either at your local dealership or online at out of state dealerships like 1sttoyotaparts.com.

To the OP: if you still need that connector, I may have one too.

Nah it's all good, thanks haux. I bought a generic one at Lordco Auto Parts (up in Canada) for like $4, and then I cut the wires to the original socket and used some wire connectors (strangely enough, they're called "Butt Connectors" to hook up the new socket. Works great.

Thanks.

'Butt splices' is what I know them as. Very funny term indeed. =)
