3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok so this only happens during the cold season n here in the North East is already nice and cold. When i try to start my car up and it hasnt been move for hours, meaning is cold it will crank up first, i will have to release the key and bring it to starting position and one more time turn it to start it and it will start the 2nd time with no issues. Now that i finally got my remote starter back, it still does it. I though it was the battery so i got myself a brand new good battery 4 days ago and it still does it. I doubt its the starter cuz is only 2 yrs old, but what do i know!
So in reality i dont not know how to narrow this down and find out what is causing it. Again it only happens when is cold so winter time, it never happens during summer spring or even fall.
Let's see if I understand. When she's had a cold soak for a goodly length of time, trying to start just results in the engine turning over, but she doesn't try to catch or stutter...just turns over. Then, when you retry, she starts like a champ, every time.
When she doesn't want to start, does she seem to be turning over slower than on a normal start?
What about variations on the starting procedure, such as pressing the accelerator a bit (or more than a bit) when doing the first crank?
BTW, what the year and engine (four banger, 6 banger) on your rig?
How long do you crank? Even when its 20 below outside my 5S-FE Camry always fires and runs on the 4th compression stroke, every time, whoop whoop whoop who.. vroooooom. I have 183,000 miles BTW.
Would be interesting to see what happens when you put ya foot on the throttle when turning over??
I reckon there's an issue with no fuel in the line... might have to suck some up before it completely turns over. I know someone who had that problem, but was a different car.
Ok sorry for the late reply guys i was busy and doing some other research on regards to it. Well here is the low down, the Spark plug cables are brand new, the Ignition Coils are brand new, the spark plugs are brand new (all done during the summer)
The cranking noise i receive i dont know how to explain it, is more of gears granding, is not like i can place my foot on the gas and force it to start, once i turn the keys, the gears just skips, and i literally have to let go the keys or other wise the noise will stay, so once i let go the keys and turn it back it will start this time.
It has to be enough hours to make the car cool, so like overnite, or during my working hours.
I was thinking that maybe it can be the starter, since is about nearly 2 years old. So any other ideas?

Two years isn't much for an OEM starter or a good rebuild. Is this one of those cheap-ass auto parts store rebuilds?
Since it engages the second time around, it's probably not the starter pinion gear or the gear on the flywheel. If you pull the starter, it's worth checking, 'tho.
To me, it sounds like the plunger on the starter solenoid is being a bit sticky in cold weather...might be just a matter of taking apart the solenoid (it's attached to the starter), cleaning off the old oil on the plunger shaft, and re-lubing. Are you ever running into just a "click" when you turn the ignition? I'd be real surprised to hear that you are with a 2-year-old starter (even the worst rebuild should have replaced the solenoid contacts), but I figured I'd ask -- always good to know about the condition of the starter contacts.
How old is the battery? Off chance the battery is marginal enough that it's not overcoming the sticky solenoid. It wouldn't be my first guess, but it's less hassle to check a battery than to pull a starter. Also, are all the connections down to the starter good and tight? Again, not normally a big issue, but bad connections can make a marginal situation worse.

Recently Adam helped me replace my starter in my 92 and when he took it out there was black crap like carbon build up or burn type burn marks all over the starter. I know the starter was going and I had the same problem cranking. At first it took 2 tries, then 3, then it capped at 4 tries. After replacing the starter, it has been smooth sailing. When its cold the starter needs more momentum to start. Maybe that is why you are experiencing problems now whereas in the summer it was fine.
It doesn't take much to remove the starter to inspect so do that first. I wish I had taken a picture of the old starter to show you but I didn't
