3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am upgrading my suspension, and as far as sway bars go, should I upgrade both front and rear or just front or just rear. Which one benefits the most? From some of the threads i've read it seems like some people only upgrade the rear.
i have read from other TN members upgrading the sway bars that upgrading the rear instead of the front greatly improves the handling. upgrading the front doesnt do much
The rear sway bar is prob the best mod you could ever do on the camry. I drive my camry all the time that doesnt have it upgraded. and rode in a friends the other day that did. The difference is crazy! im about to get one soon when the money is right. As far as front bars go you can get one but they only do very little. but hell at the price you can get one for you mine as well.
its an area of debate about the FSB. the increased rigidity promotes understeer but it does reduce the roll up front. ive always been content with the RSB by its self. it makes the biggest difference with no argument.
Pretty much what bigbird said. The effects of an upgraded front sway bar would probably negate the oversteer caused by adding a bigger rear sway bar (if you don't already have one). In other words, it would be pointless on a FWD car that already has a lot of understeer to begin with. However, I noticed that after I installed a front strut tower bar, the oversteer I had was more predictable and that I had more control when cornering. If you search you'll find a lot of arguments regarding the front and rear sway bars.
Speaking of the FSB...I'm going to be changing the FSB bushings in my Gen3 with some Polyurethane bushings fairly quickly. I was wondering if any of you knew the diameter of the stock FSB? Thanks!

If you have a 4cyl...
Front = 0.94in (~24mm)
If you have a V6...
Front = 0.90in (~23mm)

does anyone know where I can get a hold of a rear sway bar? I heard that Whiteline and TRD both make one that fits the gen3/3.5 but I just cant seem to find a place to buy it. From my understanding the TRD is slightly thicker making it better

Ebay has some whitelines and they are sold by never enough auto.
I dont know much about the difference between TRDs and whiteline RSB besides TRD has track and street setting, whiteline has none. I HEARD from another post that you can use a gen 4 swaybar in a gen 3, however you need to replace the gen 3 brackets with gen 4 brackets. So you can get a thicker RSB by getting whitelines, but anyways they dont sell TRD RSB anymore.

I just looked on eBay with the string "WHITELINE REAR SWAY BAR CAMRY" and got a bunch of results. This for sure will fit which covers all gen3's.
I guess I wouldn't miss having a TRD rear sway bar with its track and street settings because I know that I would most likely just leave it on Track all day long for street driving - I don't autocross my Camry either but I would miss the fact that its 19mm diameter when the Whitelines are 18mm. But the gen 4 whitelines are 20mm diameter making it theoretically better than the TRD.
Does anyone know if just brackets and/or bushings, etc. will be needed for the gen4 Whiteline RSB to fit into a gen3? They seem a little different from the pictures below. Will I have clearance issues? Also notice the prefab holes they have on each. They are both $140 shipped which to me seems like nothing when I think of the body roll, brake dive, acceleration slant back that it will essentially eliminate.

Damn Gen. 4 camry RSB have three holes on each end of the bar. what setting are those additional holes are for?
The multiple holes are for adjusting the stiffness of the bar. The last hole (closest to the end) will give the softest setting....while the first hole (at the other end) will give the stiffest setting. The middle hole will, of course, be in between the other two.
Does anyone know if just brackets and/or bushings, etc. will be needed for the gen4 Whiteline RSB to fit into a gen3? Will I have clearance issues? I would like to get the gen 4 one if possible.

Id personally just stick with whats made for the car. Thats what I have, not the adjustable one. It works great. I have no desire to adjust it at all. I think its very well set up from the factory. It comes with new poly bushings. All I did up front was replace the bushings. I would plan on getting a new set of end links at least in the rear. They have a tendency to break when you try to get them off. Have a grinder with a metal cutting wheel available just in case if you plan on doing it yourself. I wouldn't think you would need anything to use the gen 4 just as long as everything clears.
Did you guys end up trying a Gen4 20mm Whiteline RSB on your Gen3? Apart from Gen4 mounting brackets did you face any clearance issues?
