3rd Generation Who's Electric Antennas are freezing up?

I made the mistake of washing the car yesterday, just before the temps dropped into the teens all night, & now in the 20's for the day! Now my electric antenna only goes up 1/2 way!.....I guess I'll have to apply some WD-40 to it when it thaws out!......

You've got a working power antenna? My S2000 stubbie seems to be doing just fine

OTOH, I had a few ski trips last year where the power antenna on my Sequoia iced up to the point I had to wack it a couple of times to break off the ice so it would go back down.

I live in Long Island and our temperature is dropping like crazy! We have the same situation and my power antenna gets on my nerves so much! It only goes up half way now and I'm really thinking about switching to the S2000 antenna if the mod required less work. Other than that, it probably won't hurt the motor and will just look ugly during the winter months.

No liquid lube is required, it only attracts dirt. I do polish mine with fine steel wool to clean it and rub it with lock graphite. I still have the original mast after all these years.

I have seen in other posts where owner installed and on/off switch for their antenna. They raised it and cut the power during very cold or winter weather.

Mine still works like new, but I have an aftermarket stereo, and the antenna stayed up all the time. I got tired of that, so I unpluged the antenna's power while it was fully retracted. Now it's just down all the time. I hardly ever use the radio function anyway.

If I ever get my car repainted, I'll shave the original antenna all together, and get a glass mount antenna. That way there will be no chrome tipped bump sticking out of the quarter panel. I've look into the s2k antenna mod, but...I'm not a fan it. IMHO, it looked out of place even on the s2k, and even more so on a gen3/3.5 Camry. Anyway that's just me. If you like, that's great! I just don't.

An On/Off switch is an awesome idea. Sometimes it doesn't even need to be up I'd think to get some local channels. Where can I find this mod and how would it be done? (Sorry to thread jack)

I can't remember if it was on this forum or another one for Camrys, but the poster had mounted a toggle switch and spliced it into the power lead to the antenna motor.

Does the power lead to the antenna motor come from the stereo antenna wire? If it is, then I can see how its not hard to put a switch there. But if there's some sort of relay then it might be a bit more difficult.

No its easy. Just needs 12v+ to the black/red wire from the radio harness. For fun you could splice the green illumination wire to the black/red. Make the antenna go up when you turn on the lights. All the relays and crap are back by the antenna so all its doing it waiting for the + input from the black/red wire to pop up the antenna. Remove that 12v+ and the antenna goes down. So any kind of switch to make and break that input makes things simple.
I went from the gray 12+ Acc wire to the switch to the black/red because my stereo has no power antenna output.

Thanks for the steel wool idea white95cam. Ill try that. The past 2 days driving to work in -17 degree weather has made mine only retract half way.
