3rd Generation Strut Experts Chime-in Please

Couldn't find any information on this by searching...

I am looking to replace my front struts with after-market ones while keeping the stock springs. Most of the struts I've seen don't seem to have the LOWER spring seat (platform that the spring sits in). Are you supposed to remove the spring seat from the stock struts and put them on the new ones? I'm puzzled.

Thanks for any insight!!

they dont all have it, tokicos and monroes(probably others as well) are sold for both servicable and non for the gen3. what your looking at if its a gen3 is the servicable shocks/strut, some models had servicable and some were non. in this case the shock and the strut can be separated. if yours are servicable then you can get either...but if it were me id just get the KYBs that ONEtohate has in the pic. they are near OEM spec and are great.

Thanks bigbird!

onetohate: Actually, for my model vendors (autozone, etc.) show a lot of struts without the spring support (for the fronts). My model must be serviceable. Thanks!

Id have to agree with Bird. Kybs are a good compromise. They offer a great ride weather you plan on keeping stock ride height. Or if you plan to lower later. I have them on my gen 3 and I like em. Cant wait to get my springs on tho.

whoa, dont ever assume yours are serviceable. on a 20 year old car you can bet someone replaced those shocks long ago with cheap ass monroe's.

Autozone has Bilstein Touring Class twin-tubes available for Gen3. They carry lifetime warranty and you don't have to ship things around. KYB does not replace worn out struts under their warranty.

There are followers of all brands of struts. Just go with non-serviceable ones. With the serviceable ones you unscrew the tube and put the new "insert" into the tube and fill it up with ATF or oil or whatever the new insert manufacturer suggests.

if they are aftermarket it will be easy to tell. In many cases ive seen OEM shocks and springs last well into the upper 100ks. the ones on my old 95 had 145K on them before i replaced them.

id stick with non-servicable(sealed) struts on this one. especially since bilstein, monroe, kyb, and tokico are all good brands that shoudl last a long time.

No. Not in this case. I've owned this car since it was new - these are definitely the originals!

upper spring seat from yota comes with boot/bellows as one unit.... lower isolator for spring is sandhich by spring and spring seat part of the strut

the struts are serviceable meaning the strut insert can be changed, on most of the facotry struts for these generation . the kyb is serviceable usually and many others. kyb is stocklike but also affordable. i wouldnt use kyb bump stops in the front, but i would in the rear. i wouldn't use kyb strut mount in rear. i wouldn't get lowering springs unless I had a decked for sports driving car that i rarely drove that had no utility other than rare fun. a camry isn't that and yours is not likely that either. to many risks lowering, though the eibach wpould probably be ok, but as far as I would recommend. i recommend stock springs up front moog hefty in the rear. if you reallly use the car like a truck, i guess you could do moog hefty in the front too, but i haven't tryied that or thought it was smart or wanted to.

what rusty said was the case with my car's front struts I still haven't gotten around to sprucing the front up, its working, no major prob, the rear was having prob so a ayear ago I massively spruced it up and upgraded to moog hefty, now , no bottom out sounds or nothing from having weight in trunk and passengers , or one or ther other, nothing phases my suspension now.

Thanks one-and-all for your input.

Went to pull the stock struts out and found one of the springs was broken!! That's a game changer.
Had a good coupon for Toyota OEM so I ordered the strut, mount, insulator, coil springs and spring bumper for about $180 per front corner.

Thanks again!

From where did you get the OEM coupon? Did you use it at the dealer?
I plan to replace my front struts asap and looking to source parts from RockAuto. Do you know the discount code for TNers if they buy from RockAuto?

rockauto is awesome etailer. additionally, they have warehouse in NJ or something, and if I order in time, I usually get things close to next day or in 2 days [for regular fedex ground shipping which average is 3-5 days] - since I live in NJ.

didnt know there was a coupon code for TN members. now I'm curious of the code.
