Brake Squeal!

Hey guys, my 95' has had around 3 to 5 brake pad changes with them being cleaned and adjusted but it always results back to the same squealing from before. I was wondering what the problem would be, and i can probably already guess it but would it be because i'm using standard brake pads and not the upgraded metallic ones (or whatever there called lol, i forgot the name)? I'm just a owner trying to care of his ride as best as possible but it's been preety frustrating spending the money and nothing being fixed. I'm from the houston area so if anybody has any certain mechanics they trust or etc. let me know. thanks guys

Did you change it or did you bring it to a shop?

Either way, they probably weren't worn in properly or there was no anti-squeal put on them.

i let the shop change them. 3 different places and i couldn't do them at the time because there was a certain tool set i was looking at getting but yea i dont know about the anti-squeal. If they did, then it only lasted a day at the most with my brakes

Have the rotors been changed or cut when the pads were replaced? The rotors should either be cut or replaced with each set of pads. If that hasn't been done, I would suspect that as the problem. Regardless of your choice of semi-mettalic or ceramic pads, a properly done brake job should yield no squeaks. Hopefully the shop thats been doing the pads for you has been using an anti-squeal lube after cleaning the contact areas on the caliper, caliper bracket and piston properly before re-assembly.

"with them being cleaned and adjusted"

There is no "adjustment" for disc brakes. Only drum brakes need to ocassionally be cleaned and adjusted. What was actually done? When the brakes were replaced, were the rotors turned (cut) or replaced with new ones?

Also, when do you hear the squeal? When just driving down the road without touching the brake pedal, or when the brakes are applied?

Mike

What brands are you using?

I'd recommend Akebono ProAct and Brembo rotors. Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors or their red label service grade ($17 online) work too. But get Akebono pads.

What's the condition of your calipers. You may need to clean/lube them. Or maybe even replace the rubber seals and such. Flush the brake fluid, use Castrol GT LMA or Valvoline Synthetic (both are Low Moisture Activity fluids). Good stuff.

This was my experience and my friend that I buy all my tires from confirmed what I had figured out. We put decent "oem equivalent" pads on and turned the rotors. Within a week they squealed. Turned the rotors cutting very little off. Withnin a week they squealed again. I replaced the rotors with "oem equivalent" rotors and no more squeal. My friend's shop is across the street from a Toyota dealer and he said that he always goes over and buys Toyota pads if the rotors are not being replaced. If he is replacing rotors he uses non-Toyota pads with no problems. he said that within a week he was having customers come back with a squeal if he did not do it this way.

usually when you get aftermarket brakes, even with the application of anti-squeal lube, over time the anti squeal probably wears off, leaving your newer brakes to squeal again.

get brakes that have anti-squeal technology or purchase OEM brakes from the dealer or online.
