how much am is this going to cost?

I need a new motor for my 2000 camry 2.2l. The shop i took it to says his estimate would be around 2 thousand for a used motor (from a 98 camry w/160k miles on it). He said that he was going to look around some more and see if he can get me a better price on the motor. That price includes doing a tune up and new plugs and wires and etc. on the motor.

Ive never had to do this before so is this a good price or should i keep shopping around?

If you need to know what happened is: Had an oil leak that was small. Kept putting it off then yesterday when i started it up made a loud knocking sound at idle and with gas. On the way back from getting my wisdom teeth pulled it died on me and the wife. We got it to the shop as soon as he started it and heard the loud knock sound and i showed him where i saw oil he said the motor was shot. sorry for the misspelling and incorrect grammer. couldnt think straight

Sounds like your oil leaked out and fucked up a crank bearing.

thats what the shop owner said. That it would be cheaper to get a used motor instead of replacing parts.

I had to replace the motor in my '95 2.5 years ago because I threw the #2 connecting rod through the block. The shop couldn't even figure out how I did that. We finally decided on an internal flaw in the rod.

My costs were as follows:

Used engine off Ebay - $750 EDIT: Claimed to be at 60k miles
+shipping - $150
Shop charges - $940
engine swap
timing belt
water pump
thermostat
various gaskets
fluids
Total - $1840

soo low/ No oil???

2G's for used engine is (i think) waay to much and i would shop around to other shops.

if you do stick with same shop. ask for a complete break down of everything they charge. (itemize list)

Yeah thats a pretty steep price for an engine with 160k. If they can drop something in with about 100k than 2k isnt bad, but 160k is a ton of miles.

If it were $2K for the engine then no way, but include the labor complete with new belt and all the other parts and that's probably about right. Not a great deal but not a total rip off either. However, unless the car is otherwise a total cream-puff I think just replacing the car would be a better deal.

i am in raleigh nc...and im interested.

I am thinking about buying a new car but i havent seen a 2 thousand dollar car as nice as mine. Plus i like not having a car payment. The 2 thousand is for everything, motor, labor, parts, etc. The owner said he still wanted to call around for a better price so hopefully he will.

Around $2000 for the works, including labor, is OK....about the going rate. However, your mechanic needs to seriously look harder for a fresher engine. If he will look, he can find one. But, unless you can do the work yourself....or know someone who can, etc..... you will pay pretty much the same price almost anywhere. In addition, it would be worth the extra investment to have some additional bits replaced on the (replacement) engine, before installation.....such as water pump, timing belt, front and rear main seals, cam seal, timing cover gasket, etc. If your mechanic can find a used engine in good shape.....and does replace these items.....there is no reason that you can't get years of use from the engine (if it is fresh enough).

As for the wisdom of rebuilding your car vs. buying a new one...... financially, there is no comaprison. You will ALWAYS be better off financially, in a situation such as yours, with rebuilding your car, than buying new. New cars are the biggest financial black hole that exists. I say that, if you like your Camry, then keep it.....you WILL come out better in the long run (that is exactly what I am doing with my '97 Camry).

keep it, fix it.

Use car-part.com There are tons of local full service yards in your area that will sell you the engine and lots of times will install it for you too, for a nominal price. Start there.

If he can't find a motor with less miles and cheaper, then it would probably be best for you to get another car. There is no guarantee the used engine he found would last all that long anyway.
