cold+automatic trans=wont shift up?

when it is 40 or below and i don't let the car warm up for at least 4 min the trans wont shift up or down it stays in the same gear regardless if i floor it or let off the gas until it warms up usually 2 miles down the road it will shift up but until its at running temp it wont downshift

i changed the trans fluid and filter think that was the problem even added lucasoil trans additive

so im thinking its some trans sensor/throttle sensor OR a cold start injector the hissing noise on start up but i don't thing this gen 5sfe has a cold start injector?

thanks mike

its completely normal, all 3 of my camrys have done it. 1. it warms up the tranny fluid and the tranny before normal operation, to prevent ware. 2. it warms up the engine faster, also to prevent ware. you dont need to change anything or do anything. just let it warm up the way its designed, or let he car sit for that 4 mins. i usually do the latter and plan that into every trip.

Weird, mine just wont go into 4th until its been running for a few minutes. Otherwise it acts normally cold, even at 0 degrees.

What color was the fluid? How did you "Change" the fluid?

"also i use to clean the cold start injector about every 6 months that was on my 91 celica i cant find any such thing on this gen 5sfe is there one?"

No there isn't. The fuel mixture to start a cold engine is completely controled by the computer and the sensors that feed the computer information.

"Weird, mine just wont go into 4th until its been running for a few minutes. Otherwise it acts normally cold, even at 0 degrees."

That's normal behavior. If the OP has a problem with it not shifting out of first gear when cold, then that is a real problem.

Mike

it does vary from car to car a little, often times any difference is with the temp sensors and how well teh cooling setup is working. i have a CAI and even that makes a difference compared to an SRI.

my recommendation for the v6 guys is to just get one of thoes supercharger things and that will help warm the engine up a little faster, thats why i got one.

Toyota is not the only manufacturer to do this. The computer does use the temp sensor to determine when the auto tranny should shift up. Think of it this way, when you get up in the morning, are you as energetic as you would be a few minutes later? That's similiar to the way the auto tranny works when cold
