3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Soon, I am gonna have my Valve Cover gaskets redone using Toyota Gaskets, my rear one is trickling oil a bit. Toyota dealer wants $600.00 to do the job! At least I know that it will be done right, I had them do my timing belt, assessory belts, water pump, plugs, wires, & distributor a while ago & they did a great job & gave me a free 2010 Camry Loaner for the day! Is $600.00 a fair price for the job? 1993 Camry LE 3VZFE V6........113,000 miles....
I'd have to go with EEngineer on this one. Not 100% sure what book time is on this is, but $600 is like 5 hours of book time + parts -- no way, no how for something as simple as the valve cover gaskets, even given what a pain in the ass the rear bank is. For $600, I'd want more than a loaner car -- I'd want some sort of sex act involving the Swedish bikini team.
Does the dealership charge per hour for labor, or does it vary based on the "complexity" of the job no matter how little time it takes? That would be like $180+ per hour, if done by a mentally challenged technician.

the dealership has you kissing there ass. Theres no nicer way to say it. A independent mechanic will do that for at least half the price, and the whole knowing itll be done right..... no, you never know that its been done right unless you do it yourself.
The dealerships charge these outrageous prices not because there doing something differently, they want you to buy a new car. So by making you think your 2k car needs 600$ in repairs, they lre you into a new toyota.
I found a Toyota Dealer today, who will do the Valve Cover replacement gasket job on my 93 3VZFE V6 for $440.00 + I have a 15% off service coupon!...... It's going in Wednesday morning!......I think that is a reasonable price!...... Total price after discount.......$374.00!!!

Still spendy, but as far as stealership prices go, it's reasonable.
