5SFE SXV10 5SPD camry problems

G'day all

Awesome forum you have here, heaps of great info. Hoping for some assistance if you could

Car has 300,000ks on it (183,000MPH).

Fuel economy mix of h'way and around town driving is 10ltr / 100kph or approx 10k/l (not sure how to convert to MPG sorry).

I bought the car at 174,000k's and the econonmy was only slightly better then. What can I do to improve economy? 98 octane fuel makes very little difference, nor does any addititves. Engine light does not come on whilst motor is running, only when ignition is on (normal?) Perhaps emissions system or O2 sensor crook?

Car has a shudder when taking off - suspect clutch wearing?
Car jerks a lot when applying accelerator or backing off accelerator. Suspect engine mounts? Front one looks easy - rear one not so easy. Any tricks to it?

Have recently replaced all 4 struts which improved handling a lot. Also did the timing belt but my grandfather stuffed around with the dizzy timing. Worried that this is impacting accelation power slightly. Not confident trying to adjust this as the marks on the crank are barely visible.

Upper bushes on control arm are shot. I suspect the control arm is easy to take off and doesn't require removal of major suspension components - could someone confirm?

Box has a whine in 5th after I ran it out of oil (damn driveshaft seal - if I had of known how easy it was I would have done it before it got so bad!). Used some Nulon G17 and good quality oil, but can't get rid of the noise. Still goes fine though. Any tips or just deal with it?

By the way, my mechanical skills are not the best so try to keep it somewhat simple. I like to have a go, but quite often screw it up!

Thanks everyone!

Rear motor mount is actually really easy! three nuts to get from the bottom and the main nut from the top.

jack the engine up and it should just fall out almost!

The upper nut looks near impossible to get to though. I don't see how I could get a spanner or socket onto it without removing the intake.......

Yeah it's a bitch.

You need two or three extensions and maybe a wobbly would help.

Basically, you route the first extension+socket to be straight up, then thread the other extensions between the two intake tubes.

I hope that makes sense...

Your joking...... bloody FWD cars and their silly sideways mounted motors! uh-oh, I'm starting to sound like my old man hahahaha

Would the bolt be incredibly tight? Looks like I will be going shopping for some tools first.

Just got a price on some super poly bushes for the control arms. Quite cheap compared to the nolathane branded ones but I have some concerns about them. What do you blokes think about polyurathane based bushes?

The bolt would be very tight. I used a 3/4" drive ratchet and a 4 foot lead pipe to break it loose hahaha.
