3rd Generation Car cranks in neutral not in park? Won't start

I have a 92 2.2.Drove to work the other night and was low on gas. Came out to leave and the car would crank but not turn over , and eventually died. Jumping the car didnt work. I changed the battery, battery cables and the connectors. I put in some dry gas and three gallons of regular gas. Still nothing. I tried to roll the car while in nuetral and start it but it still will only crank. After doing that it will only crank in nuetral. In park the dash lights come on but I get nothing when I turn the key. Why is that? Does something happen to the alarm when you use that shift lock button to put it in nuetral. I made sure the car was all the way in park. I dont know. Thinking ignition coil as to why car wont turn over? I smell gas up front when stepping on the gas so I assume gas pump is working. My distibutor ,cap and rotor, plugs and wires ,fuel filter were all changed three months ago.

The fuel filter is still a possibility even though you changed it a few months ago. If you actually sucked the tank dry, then the sediment that had collected there since 92 could have been pulled into the fuel line and clogged the filter. Worth a look.

Do you have an alarm system?

Confirm that all yer fuses are good. The neutral start switch could be bad. Are you sure the shifter linkage is still good and aligned?

Sounds like the park/neutral switch.
Note that this is not the same thing as the neutral safety switch! The park/neutral switch is near the ignition.

my main concern is the car not turning over. Only recently did I have the problem with the car only cranking in nuetral. The reason that started was I had to move the car from where it was and put it into nuetral without the key by using tha button by the shifter that enables you to do that. I am going to disconnect the battery and see if that solves that problem so I can crank the car in park.. As far as the car not starting, I am going to check the fuel filter. After that someone suggested the ignition coil. Unfortunatly the auto parts store wants $95 for that part . I might try ebay.
