belt vs pulley vs harmonic balancer

so ive had this squeal under the hood for a while i always figured it was the decrepit power steering belt BUT now it sequels when i turn on anything with an electrical draw the radio the lights the stereo the defroster so now im thinking its something else

i looked and what im seeing is the forward pulley the forward one the power steering belt shares with the accessories belt and i think im looking at a worn harmonic balancer because its vibrating more than the other ones

can anyone help me with this?
thanks mike

im afraid of tension it too much i think i got the cheapest belt and it will probably break on me 400 miles away from home at 2 am in a cell dead zone haha

plus the bottom pulley is wobbling OR appears to be i will go tighten it right now and see if that helps

If the harmonic balancer pulley is "wobbling"..... this likely means that it is coming apart. The pulley is in two or more pieces, held together with rubber molded in between (which is designed to dampen vibration). The rubber can deteriorate.... thus the pulley comes apart. You need to replace the harmonic balancer - it's as simple as that.

Would this be what you're talking about? Im assuming that when you remove it to replace it, you want to make sure that the timing mark is lined up at TDC so that when you install the new one it's all good, or does it really matter? This just happened to mine and my car is done until I get this fixed. Have to call in to work tomorrow to get it done.

But if the rubber bonding the two parts is compromised, the timing marks may not line up anyway because the two parts have moved when the rubber failed.

The good news is; its OK, because the dampner pulley has a keyway that only allows it to fit one way.

Hopefully it doesn't do too much damage on the way out!
