3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok so I got my valve cover gaskets replaced a couple weeks ago after finding oil on my plugs. I get in my car the next day and it has a really weird idle. It drops down and acts like its gonna stall. Took it back to the shop and it worked for a little bit after he tightened down the intake plenum better. It is doing it again and I even ran a fuel injector cleaner to see if that was the problem and it didn't help at all.
cell video of it
3vz, happens when its warmed up because the idle is under 1k warmed up, cold start its at about 2k. This idle thing happened AFTER I took it in. I took it in the first time because I had like a bogging/sputtering under heavy acceleration and that is when we found the oil on the spark plugs/boots.

I'd go hunting for a vacuum leak. Did the mechanic have to remove the intake manifold / throttle body / plenum to get to the rear bank? Maybe neglected to use a new gasket when reassembling. Or could've disturbed / cracked a vacuum hose while dinking around -- easy to do.

Yeah he had to remove everything over top the back valve cover. Ill mess with it wednesday once I have some free time and it isn't in the 20s/30s hopefully lol
Holy crap this post describes my problem perfectly! I have a 94 V6 le with 90,000 miles on it and recently the acceleration has decreased dramatically, the engine sounds like it's struggling to accelerate like it normally does and I also had this low idling problem where it felt like it was going to stall. I drive this car like hell and I'm freaking out about this giant decrease in acceleration! I have noooo idea where to begin..
So it FINALLY threw some codes, my throttle position sensor is going bad so we upped the idle so I can save up for that over priced part. Also have the rear o2 sensor going bad lol

Town & Country Toyota ( http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...&siteid=215498 ) shows that part for $135, which isn't horrible...beats list. They're pretty close, shipping-wise, to you too. Might want to wait for a "free shipping" offer -- they tend to have cheap shipping around the holidays.
Frankly, I'd be tempted to try a junkyard pull first -- the TPS isn't all that failure prone, so I'd expect good luck there. I see one on fleabay for $9 plus $14 shipping (gah!) if you can't find one locally. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/92-93...item27ad4c227f
What's the code on the rear O2 sensor? Depending on the code, might be the cat instead of the sensor.
The machine used didn't give an actual code, it said right bank o2 sensor which I assumed to be the rear
Not sure how to interpret "right bank". Typically, the sensors on the exhaust manifolds are "Bank 1 Sensor 1" (firewall side manifold) and "Bank 2 Sensor 1" (radiator side manifold). Unless your 3vz is Cali-spec (it would say on the underside hood sticker), I don't think it has a post-cat sensor (which would normally be called "Bank xx Sensor 2", but I wouldn't swear to it.
I really, really, really hate those effing "user friendly" code readers. The Pxxxx codes may take a smidge of lookup, but they're completely unambiguous. OK, rant over...
I know but its what my friend had at his shop and autozone and such only do 1996 and up cars. o2 sensors are cheap so I could probably just replace both anyways, and if my motor is a cali spec and in va I will be amazed, its a replacement motor.
