3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Recently I threw a lot of money at my car to make it a comfortable ride once again.
I didn't cheap out on the brands.
Nevertheless, some of these new parts are showing rust only a month later? What's going on?
Raybestos reman calipers. Raybestos sway bar links. Raybestos control arm bushings. A1 Cardone reman halfshafts. The o-shaped bushing for the control arm is showing rust all around it. My ORIGINAL stuff after 338k miles didn't have nearly as much rust as these brand new parts.
I'm starting to wish I went with OE on this stuff.
We recently got some snow... so I'm sure everything has salt all over it. But still, I've spent winters up north with this car, and the original parts looked excellent.

Yeah, when I got my struts replace the nuts and bolts rusted within a month. I would just rust-proof them.
I don't know if a spray rust-proof exists? but if it does, try that.
Or just paint everything next time... Like the calipers etc. Just paint them
I bought black caliper paint... but I looked at the calipers. How the heck do you paint them? There are rubber components... and then the piston. Do you have to take them completely apart?
I tried painting a little piece of metal with pink engine paint, outside in 20-something degree weather, and the paint just balled up and wouldn't stick to certain parts of the metal. Does temperature matter? I don't have an indoor climate controlled place to work in.

Yes, temperature makes a big difference. Really needs to be above 55 degrees.(it's in the directions)
As far as painting the calipers, you will have to remove them and tape them off-when you get a warm enough day.
I want to paint my valve cover before I put the engine back together, but it's been hovering around freezing. I'll just have to wait.
I painted my VC and exhaust shields just last week. It was probably around 35 here. The exhaust shield paint held really well, the VC.....not so much. hahaha.
Can you paint in your garage MR2?
Just having walls make a ten or fifteen degree difference in temperature alone. And then you can use portable heaters and heat lamps to heat up the area around the painting and it will not only stick well, but dry and cure very well with the added heat from the lamps.
Should I rub the calipers down with a scuff pad prior to painting?
Also, I fear there won't be a warm day in January. The weather likes to tease me with upper 30's sometimes, and some sun. But right when I think it may warm up... BAM. 20. =| ...fucker.

I have a covered carport. I was thinking about hanging some tarp all the way around the 2 open sides and putting a heater in there. Idunno
I just had my whole valve train upgraded-
So I wanted to install the head this weekend.
I was trying to think of a way to block the wind and warm things up alittle. Even if I could get it itno the 40's I'd be happy.
Yeah scuffing it will help. Just make sure its clean, is the main thing. Like I said, If you can bring it in your garage or something maybe that will help.Shit you could probably bring it in your house, just open the windows and have fans blowing the spray fumes out the windows.

Tarp will definietly block the wind, but it won't realy insulate a whole lot...
Maybe with enough lights and heaters it could work though! If you've got some plywood sheets lying around, or know a close construction site you can "borrow" from, utilize those to make an added barrier on the sides. Old carpet/padding can be found behind carpet stores, that will definitely insulate. I would hang padding before tarp. Blankets will work well too.
Recently noticed that my left front outer CV joint boot was torn/squirting grease/clicking etc...replaced that with $60 crapDONE CV Axles and ......the clicking still continues... but without the grease I feel stupid I traded my OEM axle that lasted me 165K miles for a piece of $hit that Cardone is.... (smashes his hand on the cv axle and gropes for answer to "Who tore my CV boot"?)

Wait, did the boot tear again? Or does the new one look fine but still clicks? Maybe the clicking is coming from somewhere else?
I probably shouldn't have labeled A1 Cardone as quality... but that's the ONLY option RockAuto offered for my 2000 Camry.
