3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I need some of you to pay attention to your RPMs at startup when low fuel light is on. And then pay attention to the RPMs on startup immediately after fueling.
When fuel is low, and immediately after fueling, when starting up, my RPM goes up to 1200-1400, then drops down to 600, hesitates/shudders for 2-3 seconds, then goes up to about a normal 700-800. One time recently, the *drop* went down to 200-300 RPM for three seconds. Again, this only happens when fueling after the low fuel light has come on. So, fuel was very low. *Normal* startup is approx. a jump to 1200-1400, and then it settles down at 800.
I am only noticing this now. I'd like to believe that I would have noticed it over the past six years if it had ever happened before.
Entire fuel pump assembly was swapped out with one from a 56,000 mile Camry. No change.
I need a few owners of this identical type of vehicle to do test this. Let your fuel light come on one day... drive another five miles or so. Get some gas. Then on startup pay close attention to your RPMs. Car should be fully warmed up when this happens. Do they do anything out of the ordinary?
If other users have experienced this, then I guess the mystery is over.

But when it's complete enough to start normally, do pay attention to the rpms on startup when the low fuel light is on. And then also immediately after fueling.
I don't usually let mine get so low, but I'll try it this time and see what it does.
Wouldn't the water have filtered out by now? This is a persistent "problem" on startup after getting gas when fuel is extremely low.
Thank you though! Just be sure not to run out of gas. I'll tell you though... I have never run out of gas in my car. And I can drive 30+ miles after the low fuel light permanently comes on. I'm unsure how much above thirty... I don't really want to find out, hehe.

My Neon claims that it'll blink the low fuel light at 1/16 of a tank but I've never been brave enough to take it down that far.
I've run out of gas once, in my old 1995 neon, cause I wasn't paying attention to the gas
As far as I knew, water in the tank might stay there, you might try a bottle or two of heet and follow it up with the more expensive "complete fuel system" cleaner, I swear by those things!

That's very interesting... as I just looked up, gasoline indeed floats on water, so IF there was water in the tank, it'd be sitting at the bottom for quite some time. Unsure how that would cause something like this to happen though.
Maybe it's worth me getting a gallon in a portable tank, running my gas low, and sucking out whatever is left in the tank?
As for cleaners... I've tried seafoam recently, but not much else.
