Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi, I have a 2000 camry. My hood won't stay up and I'm trying to figure out the correct term for the part I need to replace. I've head hood lifts, hood struts and shocks.
More importantly where online specifically would be a good place to buy them?
Hood lifts or hood support struts. Either term is correct. I got a set of replacments for my 96 from ebay for less than $40 shipped. They're almost 2 years old now, and still working fine.

Until you get new hood struts, you can clamp a visegrip on the metal rod of one of the struts just below the bigger plastic rod. This will hold the hood up while you are under it.
I have researched it a little bit and searh here but turns out with no solution. There was a recent thread but it did not have any conclusive solution.
Apparently, there is a difference between us built or japan built hood lift for 2000 camry.
I have the Japan built. Dealer wants around $70 each for Japan built while it is only about $40 for US built (also available cheaper aftermarket) which I am trying to avoid it OEM and paying $140 for fixing the hood.
If anybody have experience with this:
1. What is the difference between the Hood lift for US Built and Japan Built?
2. Is there any aftermarket brand (StrongArm, Monroe, Mighty Lift, etc) that will fit the Japan built? what is their model no.?
3. If there is no aftermarket for Japan built, can we mod it so we can use the US built for Japan built?
Anyway, thanks for any help. If there is not any alternative, may be start figuring out on how to install a hood prop.
Haux, thanks for the quick answer but the prices on the hood lift is still around $70. ToyotaPartsoutlet has it for $63 each, total of $126 for both sides for a 10 years old car. I am in Dallas, the two dealers here charge around the same price. I am trying not to spend more than $50 total for both sides.
I am looking for somebody who may have experience in cheaper alternative.
In which auto store? I'm up and down the SF bay area and San Diego often and I see you're from CA.

Never mind, I ordered a set from ebay: Lift Support Depot for less $50/pair. Read it in the lexus forum. We will see how it fits. Seller said it should fit Japan Built 2000 Camry.
