3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Near as I can tell, the 5S-FE couldn't give a rip about the gas type, for all practical purposes. I typically run Chevron regular (87 octane, 10% ethanol), but I've used a lot of other brands over the years and really haven't noticed any significant performance or mileage differences.
Just stay away from really off-brand stuff (around here the Maverick stations are in that boat) -- over time they'll gum up your fuel system. Had that happen in my old 88 Mitsubishi truck -- I ran the cheapest gas I could find in that rig, and the fuel filter and carb were a mess after ten years.
I typically run 91 in my V6 ...
My friend used to run Shell/Esso/Petro-Can 87 in his '92 4-banger before he got rid of it...
Have been told by multiple people (mostly engineers) that the more expensive fuels make your engine less prone to sludge (probably some additives in there), but I guess you can take it all with a grain of salt.
(Note: Neither I, nor TN, are responsible in any way for the accumulation of sludge in your engine, or any other side-effects, if above information proves inaccurate.)

Where I live there arent really an off brand stations so I usually use whatevers cheapest. Shell and marathon usually since there on my way home. 87 octane and I throw some fuel cleaner or seafoam every once in a looong while.
Any of the major brands will do really.. With the I4 you'll want to stick with 87, possibly moving up to 89 as the motor ages if it starts knocking or pinging a little. I fill up at the same 76 station for both my Camry and my mom's. Only difference is I put premium in her V6; the knock sensor can retard the timing but I'm fine paying for premium to get the most out of the 1MZ. The user's guide says "premium unleaded recommended."

I run Shell Regular Unleaded in my 3VZFE, I tried Premium several times, however I just noticed a slight MPG increase, however nothing in the performance department to scream about.....so I stick with regular.....
My 5SFE runs on 87 Regular, usually from Sunoco.
Ran 89 in her when gas was around 2.40 a year ago or so, felt like I got better MPG, but that's about it.
Stick with 87, doing any better wont give you any gains, as your 5SFE was designed with regular in mind.
