4th Generation 2000 Camry engine rattle?! HELP!!!!!!

Hi everyone. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry with 5SFE engine and it has 172k miles. There is a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the engine, we replaced the timing belt ( boy was that a job) with aftermarket parts, the sound seemed to have gotten better but now it sounds like it is getting worse. When we replaced the timing belt we also replaced the belt, tensioner, and the water pump. I am at a loss as to what the rattle is. At times it is very loud and then sometimes it is quiet but it is still always there. It is during idle as well as while driving. It sounds like the rattle is coming from the timing belt area. Thanks in advance for your time.

to TN.

When I had a rattle there, it was indeed the timing belt. But since you've already replaced that... is the timing belt cover on properly and tight enough? Maybe the gasket for the cover was worn down someplace and you're hearing plastic against plastic? Just a thought.

check around under the front bumper for loose plastic linings and parts if none, im thinking an exhaust leak.. so check the exhaust hangers. good luck!

Does it sound like:
Page 2, Msg#30, when engine is around 1800-2300 RPMs:
quest continues: gen1 solara (gen4 camry) clunking in reverse sometimes

Or, Page 4, Msg#46, click on the sound like at the bottom of that message.
Headgasket job how long should it take

We're still trying to nail down the first case when OP comes back from vacation. If so probably main bearings. You can see corrosion on the cylinder head in the second. That reminds me to tell ehe OP he needs to look into it.

I'd recommend that you take the car and have an AERA Engine Rebuilders Association member shop listen to it, as I told Fenixus as he returns.

In his case I suspect the front main bearing because the RPM range. This is another reason I thought the jack-screw tension adjuster is just a joke.

timing belt cover

Hello John GD,
Thanks for your reply, I will consider taking it, but we really would like to try to fix it ourselves ( money being tight and all)

Hello Haux,
We were wondering if it was plastic against plastic, maybe something that had come loose. We purchased after market, not Toyota, parts because we have limited income, my husband has since started looking for the same parts in the event we have to do the job again ( which I really hope not) and he noticed that the new kit has seals in it that the original one did not. He is thinking that maybe some oil leaked onto the belt and compromised it. What do you think? Thanks for your reply!

Just for future reference, if you'd ever prefer OEM over aftermarket:

Complete diagrams are available at www.toyotapartszone.com
You can find any part number there. Or just check with a local dealer for the part number.

Those part numbers can then be ordered through www.1sttoyotaparts.com or http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=215498

What kit and seals are you talking about anyway?
And *I* don't see how oil on the timing belt would cause a rattle of any sort. I could be wrong. It would definitely not be a good thing in any case though.

You may want to try what JohnGD suggested in an earlier post. I doubt any place would charge you just to have a listen.

What else is left on the front of the engine? Could it possibly be the oil pump making all that noise, does the light ever blink? Or gauge ever fluctuate? Maybe its time to take it in for a proper diagnosis before investing any more money.

This is a long shot, but... my sister's 2000 Camry also makes a slight rattling noise similar to what you have described. As far as I can tell with hers, it's actually the hood moving up and down onto the upper radiator support because the hood stops and latch allow this movement. My 1997 Camry also used to do this a tiny bit, and for me a piece of 1/2" thick closed-cell foam between the hood and upper radiator support fixed it.

Well its not something internal since the engine would be long gone by now.

Does is rattle without the car moving when your in park?

Could be something on the belts, Possibly the AC compressor since its that low in that area. If you can I would take the Alt. belt off and turn the car on and see if its still rattling. Dont run the car for more that a minute or 2 or the battery will drain out.

If its possible post up a video/sound clip of the noise it could be as simple as a loose exhaust component. Most corner exhaust shops inspect for free.

Thanks for your reply. We will try removing the belt and see what happens. The rattle does happen in park as well as drive. We think we have located the general direction, it sounds like it is coming from inside the timing belt cover.
Thanks again for your input.

Did you ever hear back from OP and did they find out what was their rattle problem? My rattle sounds the same as the video you were referring to.
