I have searched but have found no definate answer. how much Trouble am I gonna run into Switching this 2.2 Engine from the wrecked 1996 to my 2.2 1997 Toyota Camry?
Or Can someone tell me what year would be compatiable?
Thank's in advanced
Emory
i think you eill have legal issues, since you can legally swap a engine into a car only if the engine is same year or newer than the car.
Not really concerned with that!
Just wanted to know what problem's would I have in order to get this engine to work.
Or what other year's would be a direct drop. if any.
someone told me that on the 1996 model I would have to Plug the Dist. hole.

as long as it passes inspection, thats not an issue hed have to consider, plus hes in georgia so they dont care.
i know its not a direct swap. im not versed alot on the 5sfe but i believe the block was slightly changed between the gens and there were computer differences. the motor and all will swap over but it wont be a plug and play kind of swap.
You'd be better off finding an engine from a 97-2001 camry. That will be a direct swap, no confused.
Plug and play.
Ok! Thank you for that Info. That was what I was looking for. so I will forget about the 1996 and try and find one from a 1997-2001 for a direct swap.
We do not have emission test here in Georgia except Atlanta and I would not live there if someone gave a a new Toyota lol

I just found a perfect body condition '99 Camry and instead of repairing my '92 I can swap over my engine to it. Now i know theres a difference between the two ingnition wise but since I'd have both cars with harnesses and everything couldnt I just swap in my '92 ECU into the '99 to make the it work?

Again, legal issues. The engine going into the car would have to be the same year or newer. The engine would not be emissions compliant for the year of car it would be in. It would never pass any emissions test it would be subjected to. it would be tested as OBDII but the engine would be OBDI. You would have to swap the engine, ECU, all the wire harnesses, ignition system, and maybe even the guages.

If you have the means, you could swap the 99 head onto the 92 block and make it a non distributor engine and swap over all the sensors associated with it/OBD2.
Basically convert your old engine to OBD2 using parts from the 99 and 92. It should be doable but might take some effort. Basically take the 92 bottom end and put it on the newer car and bam.
