3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was wondering, has anyone ever tried putting a 2AZ-FE engine into a camry before? mainly the v6 camry. Can this engine fit into a 2001 camry with a V6? Is there alot of mod that needs to be done. Is this a good idea because with a V6 car the body could be heavier? affect handling, drive comfort?
yes it will. the gen1.5 solara was equipt for 2 years(i think) with the 2az and its the same as the gen4.5 camry. m however you will likely have to swap everything. computer, tranny and motor mounts if they fit, hell prolly the whole subframe would be easier. then get it to work with the camry guage cluster. ive actually been VERY surprised the gen4 and gen3 guys have not persued this more since theres alot of support for that motor and it should even fit in the gen3. i know it has had some boosted issues but from where i sit it seems a better option then a 5sfTe or 3sgte.
Ah I see thanks bigbird "you has boost". Yeah I was just looking around for toyota engine swaps and saw the scion's 2AZ with VVT-i and I just thought that it would be an ok motor in the camry, I actually was thinking of the 2jz ge from the is300 and making the car rear wheel drive but the work seems soo impossible.
and nothing is impossible if you have enough money... question is - is it WORTH it? to me, the time/effort to convert a camry to rwd and make a 2jz fit (firewall/tunnel and dashboard mods required for sure!) just isn't worth it. seems to me it'd be just as much work to swap in an STI drivetrain and would probably require LESS chassis modification, and would be MUCH more fun to drive afterwards! back in the camryman days i had a crazy idea of getting a gen2 wagon and swapping in the celica all-trac drivetrain and running gear. probably wouldn't be too hard, considering the fact that an all-trac camry existed that i could source parts from, such as the whole rear-end setup and driveshaft... boost that puppy up and talk about a sleeper!!

They made an all-trac gen3, didn't they?
IIRC, ASG14 could help with converting the OP's current car to AWD, if he has the money.

^^^
i had a thread about this last year i wanted to put one in my 91 celica the motor mounts are very similar and at the time i could have got my hands on one out of a tc for 2500$ with 10k miles and everything computer harness (trans was extra) the biggest problem we went over on this was the gas pedal computer and trans (duuu) but it is an exelent idea because its allready got tons of power there new and the support is excelent
it makes too much sence i did the figures it would have cost more to rebuild and fit a 3sgte than this brand new engine...just imagine not even having to change the spark plugs!!!

yeah, the SXV10 came with AWD in japan (i.e. the Scepter). You'd probably have some fun trying to get that shipped over though ("Yes, I ordered the lower half of a 17-yr-old toyota. Why hasn't it arrived?")
actually, ASG14 was looking into a gen3 AWD project. If it goes well for him, I'm sure a lot of my fellow Canadian TN'ers will be hassling him to fit them with AWD too

Need performance parts?
Shoot me a PM, I'll see what I can do
eh, they're ok... but i was thinking a wagon over a sedan to enhance the sleeper effect. i mean really - who would expect a "beater" wagon to actually be fast?
