4th Generation Need Help With 98 Camry Alarm

i'm trying to find out how to use my car alarm that i'm sure is installed in my car. it is a 98 camry LE. not sure about the alarm type but it has this patent http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5479156.html
There is a little light mounted on the dash under the steering wheel. Sometimes the light comes on, sometimes not. The light also has an opening on the front as if something can be inserted into it. I followed the wire coming from it back to a little black box to the left of the brake. Didn't see any buttons or anything on there. I am trying to program a remote that I got for cheap on ebay to work with it. Can anyone help?

4th Generation More Info

Thanks for trying man, but yea I've seen that thread. I guess I shoulda been more specific on what I've done so far. I have tried programming by entering the key in, cycling the locks 5 times etc. I tried to do the one where you pull out the power window switch and connect the purple wire to the white/black stripe wire but I could not find a purple wire. All I know for certain is that I have what appears to be some type of alarm system (and after reading that patent above I believe I am correct), although I am more interested in the remote entry. There is a little device with a hole in it attached to the dash under the steering wheel area. It has a red light on it that comes on sometimes but recently has not been coming on (I've had the battery disconnected doing repairs and mods [no I didnt mod or repair anything that would have to do with the system, I put in footwells and fixed my starter]). Any help that anyone can provide in helping me figure this out would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I need to provide anymore info!
