changing distributor o-ring

After changing ignition coil someone mentioned to change the o-ring on the dis. I picked up an o-ring from the dealer with a gasket for the dis cap. When I had the dis out i could see a ring on the shaft of the dis, I assume this is it. The o-ring is hard to get off. If I have to snip it ,I will. I am more concerned with putting the new one on. Do i have to take off any part of the shaft or do i just slide it on. I know it sounds like a silly question, i want to do this once so i can get this thing back together. Thanks.

Good chance you'll have to cut the old o-ring off -- it's going to be brittle and inflexible. Old one should have no trouble stretching over the end of the dizzy shaft to get to the slot on the housing. A light coating of engine oil on the new seal will make pushing it up there a mite easier, and will also help things seal up when to put 'er back together.

If your having a hard time with the old o-ring, get a small nail. Lightly tap the nail into the o-ring until it splits. Then it will be much easier to remove.

Easy to reinstall with a little oil or grease. Good time to buy or borrow a timing light if you don't have one.
