3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
What are my options, guys? About two years ago I replaced a bad rod bearing in my 2000 Camry and put about 30k miles on it then, this weekend, BAM....one of the rods went through my block! Looks like motors for this car (4 cylinder) are hard to come by, and if I can find one it's gonna be pricey.
Any tips? The car is paid for....so that is why I'd like to fix it if possible, but I don't want to spend too much doing it. It has about 140k on it...but it was running great until the blow out.
Anyway, let me know what you'd do in my situation.
Drop another engine in it or buy a new car are your only options.
Replacing the engine can be done in 2 days if you work at it.
They're not too hard to come by, and not too expensive either.
You can get one usually under a grand with under 100K on it. I would try to find one at the junkyard that got rear-ended or something. Talk to some mechanics around you see if they have any good connections for engines.
If you can do the work yourself, drop in a used engine. If not get a trusted mechanic to drop in a engine with a decent warranty. It would suck to have to pay for labor to put a used engine in and then having it conk out after the junk yard warrantys gone.
If the car doesnt need any more work than the engine I would replace it. I wouldn't think it would cost more then 1500 to have a mechanic drop in a used engine. I would think that short blocks arent to hard to come by if you wanna keep it rather cheap. Whole 5sfe's arent to hard to come by either. 97-01 should work 96 might too if it has coils.
If the tranny and body are in good shape its worth it. Around here it would be maybe worth 2500 with a blown engine, so basically nothing. Part out value would probally be even less.

Part out values are usually MORE than whole value. I bought my first camry for $700 with a totaled body and bent frame. It had a trade in value of $400. After taking the engine and transmission out and putting it in another camry, I parted (am parting) out the old camry and thus far have made $1500. Almost 4 times as much as I would have made trading it in!

Thats awesome man. From my past experiences it works out the other way.
Usually if the cars not damaged someone will buy it to get it running. If its damaged usually parting it out will get you alot more. It all depends on the situation.
For example the local shop had a 99 camry with a rod knock with 220k. The owner let them part it out for him. They sold the parts for a crap shoot basically. I got a ton of parts for really pennies. They woulda made more money selling the body intact. Im not complaining cause i resurected my camry for under 150$
If someone has the space and time to part out a camry, you could make a ton of bank just like you are. I just feel that some people rush things and sell parts for 1/3 of what there really worth.
There should be tons of Gen 4 5SFEs out there. Many junkyard pulls are a few hundred with 30-day warranty. But a good reman with 3yr/100K mile warranty can go upwards to $3000. Check Marshall engines (also on rockauto.com or Toyota dealers) or Jasper engines if you want to go the premium route.
Check phonebook for local JDM motor importers of used engines from Japan. Basically imported junkyard engines.
Just beware of shops charging you premium and then giving you only a 30-90 day warranty. Those are really junkyard pulls.

junkyard is your best bet. engine importers know how hot these engines are and charge a hefty price. i got one for my celica for under 300 dollars compared to the 1000-1500 i've seen them go for from my area importers.
Sorry to hear that, how did you blow a rod through your block?
Miraculously, I recovered both bearings from the blown rod. They weren't burnt, so the bolts must have failed. About 30k miles ago, with instruction from forum members here, I replaced a bad set of bearings in this car, but it has driven fine ever since. One guy asked if I had used the same bolts when I put it back together, which I did. He said that it is recommended to replace the bolts when you replace/inspect rod bearings.
Anyway, I'm having a difficult time running down a motor locally. I've since bought a new car, so I've go some time to look. My son will need a car in about 4 months so I'm hoping to have it repaired by then.
Try craigslist for motors. Usually you'll find people parting out. Or you can get cheap JDM engines from craigslist as well.
what year-range of motors will work in my 2000 Camry? I just got a price from a local salvage guy and he quoted me $1450 for the engine, $450 to install. He said 60k miles on motor, 90 day warranty.
