3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ugh, I've been so upset past couple of days. Over the weekend some bastard slammed into the back side of my car and ran. I eventually caught up to him for a shot of the tag but it crumbled the back door to the point where it can't be opened or closed. It was popped open at the top and smashed in at the bottom. The front passenger side is crammed too, and cant be opened.
Looking at it, seems like the back wheel is slightly bent over. Part of the door frame is inches from my tire and is shredding it ever so lightly with each pothole or bump.
All seems well, but after this is all said and done I know the repair costs will be enormous, but rest assured the one who did it is going to pay for this shit . I thought about replacing the door from a wrecker, but its impossible to open by hand. I couldn't even bend the frame thats hitting my tire.
Is this better than it looks? sorry I dont have any pics as I dont have my Elph with me. Just picture, back door smashed in, back tire slightly bent but still drivable?
If your rear quarter is pretty done its probally gonna be called totaled. If youve got the whole insurance/police process going and the other guy has insurance try getting the car totaled. You could then probably buy it from insurance and fix it up yourself cheap.
Pics would help us determine $$$ of the damage.
I smell law suit lol, you could probably make a couple bucks off this.
The smell is bittersweet right now. it happened near the bars around 3:30 near the bars. I was on the main street, he was barreling down the cross street with a stop sign, so I didn't see til a sec. before it happened. To the left of me were all the bars, no outlet...so I dont see how he could have missed it unless he was planning to 9/11 the bar with his car.
The part that is damaged mostly is the back door. I think it was around 15-25 mph. The front door is jammed because of the back door. The frame parts around the door are obviously bent up. I wouldn't think it'd be 2,500 at Maaco, would it I want to go and find out, but Im just waiting from investigative unit to tell me what, why, when and where I only had liabilty...which is why finding the guy is so important
Moral of the story: Never attempt outrun a damaged 96 camry

Reason: erased what type of car it was
no it can not. despite hoy much your friend wants it to
its good you got the tag, all told you can take it to small claims if worse comes to worse. pics will be helpful but if the door frames are bent up and suspension parts are messed up too then it could be a total loss. sorry for the mess man and good luck.
report it as a hit and run and give the police the tag. its better to have a police report when your going to the court.

Oh yeah I've done that already...Just waiting for the investigative team to get back to me.
In the mean time I need a rental car so I can put a big tarp over mine. God forbid it rains while I'm driving, a trash bag won't hold up on the highway with electrical tape
This may work to your benefit. I remember your thread about how you messed up the roof. Hopefully you'll get enough out of it for a new used car! ...whether you end up buying a new one or not.

Thats what I'm thinking! And yes the roof is bad. I'll get photos and come back and post. Trying to stay positive. I'd like to keep this one though because I've become fond of knowing almost everything about it. Plus I wanted to see how it looks with the new paint job...
But of course, bittersweet. Bittersweet. I was on my way to work, thing doesn't start now Since my car has not started lots of times, I know the sound. Its either the battery or the cables. If its the cables, good. If its the battery...Ugh.
I'm wondering if having the door open light on the dashboard caused it? Because since I cant close the door, the light won't go off?

Yeap that could have drained it. If you have a weak/old battery jsut about anything drain can kill it. For example leaving the key in the on position for just a few hours will kill the battery.
Well, good news...It actually was the door ajar light that drained it. I was able to get AAA to recharge and test it, but it has a bad cell....but its still working. I cannot believe it, the door was closed all the way, but it wasn't enough to push the button in. So I had to place a rag in between it.
As for drivability, the tire is definently hitting the bent piece of frame quite a bit on bumps...Eventually I'm going to have to atleast get that squared soon. I'm afraid to get an estimate just yet, it might cost me just to have them LOOK at it. Ugh.
Back tire is also slightly bent inward at the top, what could that be thats bent? Bearing? Ball joint?
I feel kinda cool driving a wrecked car, I feel like Nascar...still in the race

If you need to, you can actually unscrew and remove that door sensor. Unless that would cause the light to permanently stay on? You could test it out.
You should post a picture of the damage though! If it's all-over side damage... it may not be worth fixing. Especially with that existing roof damage. =\ It will cost thousands for sure, unless you can do the work yourself.

Unscrew and unhooking the door sensor will turn the light off. It will not cause it to stay on, nor will the dome light stay on.
