3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
what could I expect to get for a 98 2.2 that has 132,000 miles on it...my Camry transmission went out and I don't want to install another one so I may part this one out
any suggestions?....what will this engine swap into other than a 98 Camry
engine 97-2001? (not sure when the az went in might be 02)
i'll say post a part out in the f/s section and see what you get to dibs on parts, most guys find you can get more than scrap yard(200?) for the car easy.
i'll say now get ready for pm for parts

i think.. if you are mechanically inclined, - throw on a replacement transmission and drive it to hell and back since the 5s-fe is shitfordays when it comes to power, but when reliability and gas mileage is taken into consideration- this engine has been proven time and again that it's durable. Just some food for thoughts?..

I have years of mechanical experience, but I'm tired of working on the 95 4runner I have, and it's always something with that dam thing.I just got through replacing the head gaskets and don't feel like putting in a tranny in the Camry at the moment
can the tranny be removed without pulling the engine?....I suspect so(I'm not use to working on front wheel drive transmissions) but the manual says to pull the engine and tranny as a whole unit
I sold my engine with a rod knock and ~150,000 miles for $500.
Craigslist is your friend
well that's a happy ending for ya.....the clutches in the tranny are welded together so when I start the engine it wants to bog down under the binding.....I can put it in R and it will to go forward, in N it still want's to go forward, in D it will go forward and not to get confused I put it in R and it will not go backwards.....so I need to unhook the torque converter from the fly wheel/ flex plate to take stress off the engine

yup, you have to drop the sub frame (support the engine with a 2x4 across the top), and the trans is out rather easy
