Weatherstripping

Is there any kind of sealer needed when putting in new weatherstripping? I recently put in new ones all around from a low mileage car. The ones around the doors hold in very well. But parts of the trunk opening weatherstripping is really loose. Is it likely I put it in improperly, or am I supposed to apply something to the metal rim first?

You can use contact cement, or auto weatherstrip adhesive (yellowish colour) in a tube.

You have to press the rubber strip on tightly, use thick gloves or a block of plastic.

Yes, I bought some yesterday at Autozone. 3M made the product I bought, was called some sort of weatherstripping adhesive. It came in either yellow or black. The black was more expensive but it seemed liked a good idea. Btw, don't let the stuff get on your hand... it took a razor blade and some sandpaper to get it off.

It hardens so much? Hm. Originally, there seems to be no adhesive that was used for the weatherstripping. It basically holds on tight by itself... except the trunk's, for me in any case. I'm not sure I'd want to use something that will harden like cement and never come off of the metal rim.

if u buy the 3m stuff, its made for weatherstripping. Its still somewhat flexible. It is 'contact cement' though, so be sure you read the directions. you need to apply cement to both the weatherstripping and the metal, let it get tacky, then hold it together for a few seconds. Make sure you follow the steps becasue the last thing you wana do is do it over....

I'm not sure who makes them aftermarket, but from 1sttoyotaparts.com, my front door weatherstrips are $62.35 each and rears are $52.20 each. Trunk is $37.97. To order from that website, you can find part numbers on toyotapartszone.com or call your local dealer.

but then when its full of cr@p you can't just yank it and clean it. Example would be after buffing car and pollen fall out ect. It seems mine tends to drip a tiny amount when it gets full of gunk!

Just my 1/3 of a cent. . .
