i have the 93 3vzfe engine on my camry, and i every time i go up a hill i would smell burnt oil....it is just mine car or has anyone have this experience with their 3vzfe too...
and should i check for leakage??...if there are leaks, how should i go about fixing this leak??
Your rear valve cover is probably leaking into your exhaust manifold... Hence the burning oil smell! My dealer just changed out my valve cover gaskets for approx. $360.00! They said she was very clean inside!....Check your rear valve cover for leaks....

iv got a 94 camry 3vz-fe and i get this smell after long drives quite frequently. im not sure what it is but i think it might be oil. it can get really bad sometimes. im not sure where my leak is. iv been trying to find a fix also.
u should check ur oil level. mine used to go down a bit, but i recently did an oil change and has been topped pretty good since.
Check the back side of the engine (near the firewall) with a mirror and flash light. See if oil is leaking down from the valve cover gasket area down.

it is okay if i just keep driving like this???....again it only smells when im going up a hill...
well im not really sure about that. u should get an opinion from someone else. however my car smells ocasionally nowadays (it used to smell more often) so i left it. however if u got big major leaks it might be really damaging to ur car.
if someone else could give advice that would be good.

I think that depends on how long you intend on keeping your car. If you'd like to keep it running well for years to come, it's always best to address each and every "problem" as it comes up. If you seriously intend on dumping the car a year from now, you could probably leave it alone. I'm sure my valve cover gasket has been leaking for years and I didn't fix it until just a couple months ago (I4).

I've got an oil leak on my 4cyl 97 camry that seems to be coming from high on the back side (near firewall) of the engine. It is leaking down onto the exhaust pipe and causing noticable smoke when the car is at rest or sitting at a light. I replaced the valve cover gasket and it did not correct the leak. Anyone have any ideas on where the leak could be coming from?
^ and good on ya using the search function I think what may have happened is the gasket may not be seated properly? Just a theory Seems like it could very well happen with the rear valve cover on a V6, 1MZ or 3VZ, which is what I assume you have?
Bump, maybe someone has a better explanation
EDIT: woops, just noticed you have a 4 cyl. I guess my explanation may not be as plausible as I thought, but I would check anyways...

i poked around under my hood and found a puddle of oil under the distributor. where can this be coming from and can this cause the burnhing smell?
iv got a 3VZ-FE btw.
thanx
Most likely its the distributor o-ring. It's a pretty easy fix; part is a few dollars. And yes, that can cause the burning oil smell.
You might also take a look at the back-side of the engine block. Another common source of the burning oil smell is the valve cover gasket leaking oil and dripping down onto the exhaust pipe.

thanks for replying. when replacing the distributor o ring, if i twist it accidentally will it screw up the timing?
also will i be able to get to it easily? iv got a 3vz-fe V6, its pretty tightly packed.
where is the vavle cover gasket? what does it look like?

Man, dealers are so expensive...
As for valve cover gaskets, I would change them if you know thats it. Because one time, I got on the road not knowing it was leaky, 300 miles into the trip my car starts hesistating. Turns out, the plug wires had gotten swollen from the oil leaking in. Ended up having to do the tune up all over again...and since I really needed to change the wires as I thought the car would give out, I did it before changing the gasket.
Few months after that I had to replace the plugs again since I didnt fix it fast enough (I had the gasket fixed the same week, so it can happen pretty fast).
