3rd Generation Another Custom mod brought to you by Spitfire =]

Well seeing that latley most(keyword most) of the threads on here have been repair questions. I thought id spice up things with my new project that will be finished up tomarrow evening. Now for the pics, than onto what im actually doing. I have made a fully custom sub box that fits perfectly inside of the wheel well.

The space i have to work with

after a half an hour of measuring and ideas we came up with this.

after some saw work we came up with the base ;}

I got kinda forgetful of the pics from this point but from what started as the base slowly formed the sides an than the top to match. This front of the box that faces closest to the taillights.

this is the front that fits perfectly around the round edges closer to the rear seats.

This is with only one of the sub holes cut out. As of right now i am 98% complete with this project. the subs are ready to be mounted. all i have to do is cut the 2 holes in the carpet, wire up the box, and drop the subs in through the carpet so basically when you open my trunk you will see just subs, the box will be hidden. I know the question will pop up about putting things in my trunk so i will answer now. "yes i am putting speaker covers over them during normal operation of the car" The subs that are being installed are two 10" kenwoods (blah blah forgot part number) powered by a kenwood class d 1000 watt amp. The entire build was done at a friends house seeing that he does nothing but wood work for a living and had all the tools we needed plus more.

Materials used for this build:
3/4in MDF wood,
Alot of different and fancy saws,
wood glue,
Nail gun,
liquid nail to fill in all the nooks and micro sized areas so no air escapes,
and sheet rock screws to top it off.

Will post up the finished product tomarrow evening so keep an eye out!!! i will be posting them on this thread. Like i say in all my threads "sorry for the paragraph" but i am very happy with this mod and it looks amazing so far! cant wait to see it finished myself but for now enjoy a sexy(IMO) pic of the camry as its being worked on during the build

the spare was all dry rotted and still 100% tread so idk what imma do with that but i still have all 4 wheels and steelies at a buddys house down the road. worse case scenario im going to keep extra money in bank for emergencies which i should be doing anyways lol. i took the spare out because i dont think it would fit on my car anyways with the rims on. plus like i said it was dry rotted. must of not even been looked at since the car was brand new lol

if i do go on any long trips thought the box can come right out easy as cake and i can throw a tire in =]

did you measure out how big the box is suppose to be for your subs for the maximum output of the sub??

but good job...cant wait to see the finish product.....one more question...if the sub is facing up, that means you can put anything back there any more right??

Let us know how well the subs sound down there. I feel as if they wouldn't sound as good down in the spare tire well as in a box sitting in the trunk. It's a pretty smart idea though and can't wait to see the finished product! The Camry is lookin' really good!

i know right off the top of my head that it may not be enough. but thats why i added on the angled pieces to the top of the box. Trying to use as much of the wheel well as i could. i get off work at 445 and will be finishing up this mod. Im not expecting the most AMAZING sounding box ever but i have a strong feeling it should be sounding pretty good

on a side not if i remember right the box is about 28in wide and 30 in long with about a 8-9in depth. I will get all the correct measurements but that is all i could do to max out how large i could get the box while still keeping it hidden under the carpet

edit: just checked my subs out on sconicelectronix and it says the minimum sealed box volume for the sub is .6 cubic feet. I have 2 subs and 24in long. with about 7-8in deep. so it all should be okay.

Nice work Chris! I demand video.

For the spare tire...why not pick up a cheapy air compressor and a can of fix-a-flat? You can also find kits online similar to the ones they use in Porsches and BMWs without spare tires. But they're basically an air compressor and a can of fix-a-flat.

Nice custom job man. I like the idea. Im not 100% sold on putting the subs in the floor, but it will deff show nice. Im personally a stickler for getting the box tuned properly for the optimal sound. Id love to see some videos of the box at work.

Dude that is awesome! Great idea and good work.

One thing I would do though is find a way to protect those subs, with a grill or something. You don't want to slam something down and pop a hole in one...that would suck.

Your box looks a little large if anything, I wouldn't worry about it that much, if you want a tighter sound just glue some wood blocks in it, and if you want it louder flip the subs over.

It looks like clean build though, nicely done.

one thing you might want to do is seal up the air vent under the lower driver's side rear quarter panel, it will keep out a lot of dust and dirt that will end up on the subs.
