Probably a dumb question...

So I'm pullin the motor out of a 92 camry 2.2 a/t. I've never really done any extenive work on a fwd car before so this is a learning experience for me.

How do i disconnect the axles from the trans? Do i have to take off the wheels and remove them the hard way, or do they somehow disconnect from the tranny so i can just let them hang? Also, what do I do about the axle that goes through the engine mount?

I know the answer to this is likely in the forums somewhere, but I figured I'd ask, and search while I wait for an answer cuz I'm tryin to get this thing out tonight.

Your advice is much appreciated, thanks!

IIRC you have to remove/detach the spindle from the suspension so pretty much yes.

hmm

There is a big nut holding the axle to the wheel hub that needs to be removed. Then the bottom ball joint needs to be popped from the spindle and the axle can be slid out of the hub then the drivers axle can be popped out of the transmission. No need to pop the tie-rod ends. The passenger axle has a carrier bearing with a lock bolt and a snap ring that needs to be removed or, unbolt the carrier from the block before that side can be removed. When you pop the axles from the transmission atf will dump out so be ready to catch that with a pan or you will have a mess on your hands.

If you are attempting this without a manual and have to ask this question at this stage, you have more problems than just the wheels. A $20 Haynes Manual will save you lots of $$$ and headaches and you will learn more on your own.

Thanks to those who gave straight answers. It was a pretty easy job overall. My issue was in my (limited) experience with front wheel drive cars, the only axles I've ever had to deal with just unbolted at the tranny, which made things pretty easy. When I noticed that wasn't the case with this car my brain short circuited I guess...

I just really didnt wanna pull the axles completely out because i feared (unfortunately with good reason) that the control arms would be a bitch to separate from the knuckle. buuut once I got passed that things went pretty smoothly.

I have a new problem now, I need to get the transmission unbolted, but the engine is frozen so bad I cant turn it over to get to the torque converter bolts. Do you think if I drop the oil pan and loosen the main caps it will turn? I'm going to try that, but I can't get back to it until later tonight. Your probably better ideas are much appreciated

If you cant get the engine to free up you can always leave the torque converter bolts in. The torque converter will stay bolted to the engine flywheel when the trans is pulled. Obviously this is not ideal but works if you dont have a choice and if you have enough room. If you dont have enough room to do this you either need to do what you can to free up the engine or pull the engine and trans as a single unit. I assume the engine is junk and you are trying to salvage the trans?

yeah, replacing the motor but reusing the tranny. I had the whole thing out as a unit. Ended up dropping the band and loosening the mains and it turned over just fine. the carnage inside teh oil pan was amusing... a couple broken off and twisted rod caps and chunks of block where the rods got wedged between teh crank and bottom of the cylinder
